Practice Girlfriend (PROLOGUE)
(NOTE: This is my first time to write a story after a loong time so please bear with me)
“Look at you,” he sighed, his voice weary. “You are still a virgin… Most girls your age aren’t and have been with several boys in a month.”
“And you are a good person: you have the good wife material, you are understanding…” he paused as he wiped his eyes with the sleeve of his coat. “You can cook, you are not blinded by money and fame…”
“Someone who wants a real wife will love you, “
“I hope so, “ I mused, placing my hand on my chest in hopes to calm my heavy heart.
“I am really sorry…” he said, slowly moving away from me.
“K- why so?” I stuttered, forcing words out of my parched lips with my hand reaching out to him.
“It’s very clear that you like me…”
I felt my heart flutter in my chest, now you realise after all this time?
After all these months?
“But I am still very uncertain about my future… I should stop talking to you.”
“B-But I like everybody, Kaleb…”
I fumbled around with the scarf around my neck as I leaned against the cold marble. “If that’s what you want… I-I could let you go..”
“It’s not what I want!” he shouted, tears streaming down his black-rimmed glasses.
“But I feel so bad about it… Is this how you talk to every boy?”
“I-I used to with Jun Xian… But we are no more than friends…”
He looked at me sternly, tears soaked his pale red coat, his breathing labored.
“We just stopped talking…” I said
“But I don’t want to leave you!” he exclaimed, louder than before. “I don’t want to break your heart.”
“It’s already broken, Kaleb…” I wrapped my scarf around my neck tighter and started to walk away from him. “You can leave me now… I-I’ll forget about you soon.”
“Thank you for being my friend,” tears started trailing down the sides of my face again.
I looked at him once again and saw him clench his hand into a fist, strong veins bulging, yet his head hung low as if the heavens haven’t heard his prayer.
“I don’t know what to say - how can I feel right when I am doing something wrong?” his chest heaved as he tried to muffle his cries.
“Ignore it, like what you’ve always done in your life.” I muttered
“I can’t,”
“Just do it, Kaleb…”
“You are my best friend!” his voice echoed in the cold chamber, shaking my very core. “I can’t leave you like this!”
“Yes you can!” I shouted, my body trembling. “Just forget I exist! Forget everything about me! Forget about what we’ve been through this past months!” I fell prostrate on the floor, my chapped lips kissing the cold marble floor as tears gushed out of my eyes.
“I DON’T EXIST! I NEVER DID”
