The Ultimate Cure For Writer's Block

in #writing6 years ago

When you think of Steem what is the first thing that comes to mind?

Blockchain? Content creation? Social media? A little bit of everything?

For me, it's my preferred blogging platform (Steemit) and a way to build my personal brand across an exciting new social media platform.

And part of building a brand in social media is to keep your content flowing, almost daily!

Out of sight, out of mind....So it's my job as a content creator to stay in front of as many people as I can, as often as I can, everywhere I can...

That's a tough challenge for a lot of us...Coming up with valuable quality content every day.

And if you've ever tried to create content through blogging, you'll know all too much about writer's block!

We get stuck and can sometimes stare at the computer for hours on end...

Here's a tip for all of you that might be suffering from this and I know it helps me more than anything else out there...

Reading!

If I need a good idea on a blog post, I'll usually find it within the pages of a great book. And when you think about it, it makes sense because you are being inspired by thought leaders in their field.

Wanna learn about social media? Read 'Crushing It' by Gary Vaynerchuk.

Curious about leadership? John C. Maxwell's 'Winning With People' is a gem...

How about marketing and advertising? 'Purple Cow' by Seth Godin is a must read.

Now obviously my niches and passions are found in social media, personal development and business. But you will never have a shortage of great authors for ANYTHING you love to write about.

For basically 20 bucks we get access into the minds of these authors. Who share their passions and thoughts with us and inspire us to build something awesome.

I cannot express how many times it's happened to me...I'm stuck on what to write about and just start turning the pages of a book and before you know it, I have pages of notes and ideas for content!

Heck, it even happened last night when I was reading Tom Peters 'The Excellence Dividend'...From just one chapter in his book I got about 3-4 days worth of content...And how much did that book cost me....18 bucks? Maybe 20...

Reading puts you into 'creative thinking mode' and allows you to take a concept that an author presents, and develop your own ideas and opinions...It's the ultimate 'get unstuck' hack I've ever used and I know it'll help you create awesome content for your blog!

Hi Jon. Your advice makes a lot of sense. Do you have a certain time a day that you devote to reading?

I want to check out some of the books you listed, especially "Crushing It" and "Purple Cow."

Quick question since I am a newbie to SteemIt. I noticed you use SteemPress. Do you post to your blog first and then from your blog publish to SteemIt?

Look forward to reading more....

i seem to read more at night. but i’ll pick up a book anytime lol

yeah i love steempress. i just added their plugin to my word press blog and it instantly posts here :) one of the best apps on steem for sure.

Thanks Jon, I am thinking about starting a blog and might use steempress. Have an awesome day!

Finding content is tough sometimes, reading does help. I like to research some while I write, it's my method. I have a guy right now that wants to link to my site, on a particular post, but I honestly would rather write a post that I can put a link to him that is recent...If that makes any sense. I am struggling right now as a matter of fact because of his proposal. This is a big op for my site...so I am doing my due diligence and working on a post that will help him and my readers. any ways great advice bro as always!! Peace!!

appreciated man. yeah i’ve always said. share whatever of mine you want just give me the link back and spell my name right lol

Reading is an excellent source of inspiration and to broaden our horizon.

But here's another tip to improve writing: writing every day.

I know you already know and apply it, after all you used to do it long before I only did it once a week.

But writing every day gives you no excuses. You have something to write about? You write. You don't have something to write about? You still write. Eventually, and if you care about yourself and your brand and reputation, you will improve, and you will see you will come less and less at a point you have nothing to write about.

preach!!! absolutely man. no better way to get stuff out and improve.

Great idea, Jon. But for my special interest (design) it's not easy to find the right books and as I will work with examples I have to spend more time to finish the content I want to post here.

completely understandable. check out @creativecrypto and what they are working on. might be right up your alley.

As you know I have not been much of a blogger over the years. Here is what I have learned... you can write about things you are passionate about... if you do that events will unfold before you to inspire your writing. One of the reasons I write "An Actors Minute" is simply because people ask questions on set. Or experiences I have and others may not be aware of! So for example last week I was not feeling my best... so what better to write about than if you are sick do you get paid? One item I did not cover in the story was if you do a commercial you could be earning residuals... :) But, you get the drift of my inspirations. Ins short, if you have something that you really care about and / or passionate about it will be easier to write about! Finding inspiration will come from books, questions people ask, videos you watch, or simple life experiences!

heck i got an idea for a blog post on a trip to walmart lol true story lol

Exactly my point! You never know where inspiration will come from... reading is definitely a source! :)
