BLACK PANTHER; WHAT I REALLY SAW...

Hey people. Today I saw the black panther and I must say, it was a lit movie. I mean that movie was fire. But I’m not here to give spoilers. I’m here to talk about a realization I came to during the movie.
To the untrained eye, Black panther is a movie that talks about a guy in a metal cat suit, running around and doing cool stuff. But when I sat in the cinema, I saw so much more. I want to take a critical look at Wakanda, the most technologically advanced country in the Marvel Universe.

It’s a country in Africa but yet is almost completely free of corruption. It’s a country that is far ahead of others in every way but yet maintains its own heritage so well that they are completely governed by it. A country so full of resources but yet, has never tried to force their will upon the rest of their world. A country I found myself wishing mine was like.

When I was watching the movie, honestly, I was impressed by "Black Panther" and "Kill Monger" was so cool but the country itself was magnificent. It was like dressing up New York for a Kenyan festival. The culture was everywhere. In their clothes, in their way of life, in everything. And I must say, it was wonderful. I kept on comparing Nigeria to "Wakanda" in my mind and while we don’t have something like "vibranium", we have more than enough natural resources to be by far better than a lot of other countries. I won’t ask when we’ll change. Instead I’ll ask what has to be done to make Nigeria better. Do we need a T’challa? A good man that will try to do what is right. Or do we need a kill monger? A ruthless man that will take Nigeria by force and impose his will on us, whether we like it or not. In their own individual ways, both options would be good for this country.

I’ve given this a lot of thought for a really long time (about two hours) and honestly, we’ve become complacent. We have learned to take rubbish from our leaders and that is why we are the way we are. I don’t see how the government will tell us that a snake ate thirty-six million and we’ll just take it like that. They don’t even try to make up good excuses anymore and it sickens me. We have no one to blame but ourselves. In this country we let our leaders walk all over us and its wrong. We need good leaders but first, we need to learn to point at our bad ones and say “I know what you did and you will pay for it.” We need to learn because right now all we know how to do is mumble.

I once saw a picture of a journal entry written by Lord Lugard and he said that this country was morally and culturally bound and that the integrity of our people made it such that crime was near non-existent and our people were strong. It further went on to say that the only way they would get what they wanted was to destroy that cultural and moral integrity and force us to believe that what they presented was right and our way of life was wrong. I don’t know if it’s true but if it is, then it’s sad because without the British, we might have been the real Wakanda. But alas, we cannot change the past, we can only forge the future and I believe that if we hold fast to our culture, Nigerian and African, then we can grow beyond our wildest dreams. We can be Wakanda.

Wakanda is just a place in a movie, Nigeria can be the real thing…

That is all for today guys, the movie was beyond fire. You need to see it.

If you liked it please,
