Math and Literature
By Liu Hanzhang (Felix)
Math is something that we humans can never understand. We want to take advantage of it, but we cannot reach the end of Math. This concept is way above what a human mind can comprehend. A mathematician is a person that tries to comprehend. They know that they can’t reach to what lies at the end of the line of math, but still reach out for it. They stand on the last mathematician’s shoulder so they can reach out further. They are the real explorers of the vastness of math. They have the most logical minds, and the most creative souls.
Einstein once said that everyone is genius in something. These geniuses in math, are rather unique because math is the center of the grand web of civilization. And it is also the start of civilization. The language of the universe. And so is literature, the language of the humans, and we made this so that we can comprehend, something literal that we can grasp into our hands and toy around with. This series of toying resulted with writing.
Writing was created to help to remember. Remember the famous events that happened through the course of history. Numbers are to be made as currency, to distinct from 1 apple, from 5 apples. These two grand creations are used on a daily basis of humans today; from Euclid’s Elements, to the Bible; from the famous Euclid’s postulate 5, to the all-forgiving Jesus; from Newton’s Calculus, to Li Bai’s poem; from Archimedes, to Shakespeare; from Riemann, to Liang Qi Chao. One by one, these great people that we take pride as the best of the best, flow out like water. We’re all born to die. All that’s in between is a bonus, some extra time for you to realize that you have made the best out of your life. And these people tried to accomplish and were the closest to succession.
Writing and Math can be said to be two kinds of ways you can express yourself; one logically, and the other social. These two languages are what we speak today. When we bargain for the price of cabbage; when we talk to our friends about the snake that you just ate yesterday; when you wonder how many strands of hair you have in top your head; when you try and figure out how much energy is sucked into the pancake when it’s baking.
Both of them are beneficial to humans and we , in general, wouldn’t want it to disappear all of a sudden. It would be kind of confused if we couldn’t use numbers anymore, and even more confused when we can’t use words anymore.
So with the conclusion that words are basically different symbols that represent the information that you want to express, and numbers are basically different symbols that represent the quantity that you want to express. And that will be my viewpoint on Math and Literature.
