WHY YOUR CHILD FINDS IT DIFFICULT TO WRITE

Writing which is a basic part of child development has not been given attention to in most schools in Nigeria. Children at their early age begin to hold stuff scribble and paint, so far Nigerian schools have focused more on the Rhymes and forget about the fundamentals which is writing.

On personal research I observed using case study of a school pupils ranging from basic 1-6 and about 60% of the pupils can be said to have dysgraphia ( inability to write legibly ) which I believe is as a result of lack of attention from the teacher due to the population of the class room which is supposed to be at least 10 pupils per class with an assistant, instead you have 20 pupils with just a teacher to manage making it difficult for them to identify the problem at an early stage.
Some major cause of the problem are as follows

1. Pencil Grip
2. Sitting position
3. Type of pencil
4. Placement of book
   Grip: the way children grip their pencil determines how legible their writing would be. This is so because a wrong grip tends to disturb the muscle which leads to pain making the child decide on writing to finish the task rather than writing to be able to read for future reference, if this is spotted out by the teacher, corrections can be made on time which may reduce the danger of been dysgraphic by introducing the use of pencil grip and some finger exercise to help put the muscles at ease.
   
   Sitting positions : some children have awkward position when writing some may be as a result of sitting on a stool lower than desk making it difficult for them to write, some twist their legs while writing diving the concentration on what is written to how their legs feel, some sit in a position that makes writing difficult for them to achieve.
   

Type of pencil: the type of pencil a child uses also determines his grip, and writing pattern, using a round edge pencil makes pencil grip difficult for a child making the child hold the pencil in awkward positions than the normal position that reduces stress on the hand muscles while writing.

Placement of book: The way and manner we place the book also affect our hand writing. When the book is placed in a straight position writing becomes difficult because the way the hands are placed on the book becomes stress to the child making writing a difficult challenge. The proper method however to place book for proper writing is the slant method which makes it easy to drag your book while writing and thereby reducing the stress on the child’s hand.

If we can identify this problems mentioned above we will observe that writing in early age won’t be a challenge and the hand writing will be legible making our children a better writer.
