Amsterdam5 or Amsterdam, according to the etymological pronunciation (About this sound Amsterdam (? · I) [ɑmstər'dɑm]), is the official capital of the Netherlands. The city is located between IJ Bay, to the north, and to the banks of the river Amstel, to the southeast. It was founded in the 12th century as a small fishing village. For years Amsterdam, a very tolerant city, has been considered as the "gay capital" of the world. During the annual Gay Pride Festival the streets of Amsterdam dress up as a party, and on Saturday the famous parade is celebrated by the "Canal Parade" channels. Dozens of ornate and crowded barges parade through the canals in a festive atmosphere that is repeated throughout the city.
