DEADLY SINS OF THE WRITING CRAFT.
Here are seven deadly sins of the writing craft. Have you committed any of them? What remedy have you taken to suppress the sins?
Laziness
Intellectual laziness is something all writers are prone to: as in writing the same type of book, and doing it annually.Trying to be a good student
Lisa Gardner, author of The Killing Hour said it’s a thrill to rope a lot of cool forensic facts in the research process. But the danger is in going home and regurgitating all of them in your novelMarching down the outline
Marching down the outline occurs when you sit down to write and follow your outline exactly.Denying jealousy
It’s a good thing to let some of that jealousy seep through. “It’s really healthy to let yourself have the full range of emotions.”
5.Focusing too heavily on the business
“To the exclusion of actually writing novels, don’t be obsesses over the business end of writing”Not reading books
Reading is essential for writers. As one who wants to become a writer, ask yourself "how many books do I read a year?"Imitation
There is a difference between imitating a book, and being influenced by a book. Therefore, it’s valuable to figure out why you think certain things work in the books you read, and why others don’t, and then being influenced by a particular book will have positive results in your book you aim to write.
I'm guilty of No.!
And especially 5: Focusing too heavily on the business
I did start writing in order to sell my work
Make money
Become as famous as Hugh Howey & Andy Weir
But, it is a deadly sin because it gets in the way of actually writing - which is what helps you achieve the goals
Well thought out and presented post
Request For Help And Feedback
I'm writing a series of posts on the top 100 songs for and about creative people
I.E. Which songs speak about the struggle, and the urge, to create art from our perspective as writers and artists
Some opf them about - and from - people who've made extraordinary sacrifices to pursue their dreams
some spell it out quite clearly - for the non creative masses to understand
Some use metaphors to speak to us directly, and connect with our creative souls
Feedback and suggestions are very welcome
