Improve Your Perspective on Your Life With This Creative Trick

in #writing7 years ago

Face it- you're biased. You are too close to the project so you cannot see it for its entirety. Your beliefs and opinions about yourself are warped.

But that's ok! It's perfectly natural. However, in order to grow creatively, you must expand your horizons and see things from a different perspective.

Have you ever written a bio? A few sentences about yourself such as the ones you'd find on a book jacket about the author? It would say the very best things; what you like to do, a brief list of your accomplishments. John Doe is an accomplished author and life coach. He overcame adversity... Faced challenges and won at life... lives in the self sufficient cabin he built in the mountains of Montana with his devoted wife, three sweet children, and champion bloodhound dogs...

Of course you are going to write only the veryiest bestest about yourself and portray yourself in the brightest light available!

If you have never created a bio for yourself, do so now. Pretend you are the author of the hottest New York Times bestseller and write a paragraph or two as you would have it appear on your book cover.

But now you're going to do something to broaden your perspective of you, and maybe even make you face a few ignored truths. It might be a little uncomfortable, just use your judgement as to how far you wish to go if this is a touchy subject.

Be real, be honest, and take a look at yourself from the eyes of different people.

And write three bios.

Write one bio from the point of view of a neutral person. Someone who neither loves you nor hates you. An objective view from a neutral party.

Then write one describing you from the POV of a jealous person. They are impressed by your accomplishments and embellish your achievements.

Finally, write a bio from the perspective of a person who hates you. Detail everything they would say about you from their unique point of view.

This fun little exercise will humble you and bring to light some things you usually keep under the covers. It is uniquely effective in getting your creativity flowing, and opening your mind to a variety of viewpoints- which will help you in many areas of your life.

This is an intriguing challenge and I can see that it would be mighty revealing and valuable.

As you say, oftentimes we are too close to see the whole picture to see clearly.

Perhaps we are our own harshest critic! ~ By doing this I imagine a person would reveal their bias.

I think many of us here feel insecure about our abilities and question the value that we bring to the table; creating content that goes unnoticed has the potential to seriously screw with a persons self perception.

Thanks.

This activity definitely reveals a lot!

I absolutely agree that many of us question the value we bring. It is a good thing in a way- we strive to be better always :)

A lame $0.01 :(

Awe, thank you hun <3 I appreciate your support, truly :)

Wow, I feel like I just read my own thoughts. (Get out of my head, stranger.) :-) I am one of those who are very hard on themselves. People I am around a lot, tell me to stop beating myself up. I have gotten a little better, but it's hard. Doing this bio may help me in more ways than not. Great comment @Idacey-laforge.

Gotta be kind to self lovely.

Agreed :-) but not always easily accomplished.

Writting a biography from three perspective it say from "people that hates you" will be hilarious, because so many funny things you'd include, nevertheless it will certainly bring tonight a few things you don't even know.

Hi there my friend it's been a while

Hey Jose!

Hilarious and eye opening ;)

Yeah how about you really start a contest people can write contests three biography, just for fun though, no prizes

That is a great idea!

Lol call me a genius 😂😂😂😂😂

I would love to see you post an example for yourself!

Ok!

Arbitrary Kitten is stubborn to a fault. She does not quit, even when she is behind. This could be construed as an attribute, however, in this case she will continue to lose and hit bottom before she quits. Her innate inability to ask for and accept help is dangerous to her well being and selfish to those who wish to give her a hand. And she is very, very overdue for a relaxing holiday, the dang workaholic.

;)

This would help us get more in touch with who we are. I suggest adding POV of those who value us more than we do.:)
Thanks @arbitrarykitten. and have a nice day.

Great idea! Thank you! You have a wonderful day youself <3

You welcome.

Hmm, I like this idea and doing this exercise may help me a bit. I copied and pasted to my wordpad, so I can work on my Bio. Love this too much to not resteem. :-)

Let me know how it goes!

Indeed, and maybe I will get brave enough to post it. After I read it a dozen times, lol. :-)

I've tried to write about myself and yes it helps me to know better myself. My perspective of my life change since I figure out whats missing to make my life become better.

I am not perfect and I have also lot of flaws but I tried to be good enough as a human being. But I accept myself as who I am. 😍😁😁

Wonderful Blog!!@arbitrarykitten
Stay awesome!

It is good that you realize you have flaws but do not down yourself and accept all that makes you you :) True- nobodys perfect!

great motivation, you write with heart, very valuabel, amazing @arbitrarykitten, made me long to stay in reading your post.

that means a lot :) Thank you!

Very good writing, not bad for motivation

Now this is something to try.
This is a very good post.
I just woke uo now and about to start my day, I am so glad I got to see this post.
I used to always try to judge myself from the point of view of others, but this would help me confirm if I have been doing well at it or not.

Upvoted and resteemed, because I think everyone should see this.

I don't think it's healthy to judge yourself based on others' perceptions, but a glimpse and take note is good :)
