Iranian women are having the time of their lives at the World Cup

in #worldcup6 years ago

While in their own country Iranian women are banned from football (soccer) matches, they are having the time of their lives during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

If you're following the World Cup and watched the Morocco vs. Iran game, you must have seen the large amount of Iranian fans in the stands. Not only is this special because Iran is continuously villified in the Mainstream Media and here we could see that Iranians are just normal people like the rest of the world, but it's also very special to see that Iranian women were among the fans. In Iran, the theocratic government prohibits women from attending football matches, among many other prohibitions.

No headscarfs!

One of the other rules that the Iranian State imposes on women is that they are required to wear a headscarf, or hijab.

At the World Cup, it seems that female Iranian attendees are happy to take them off for once. Can you blame them?

This is a great example of how oppressive and unproductive to happiness laws can be when they deprive people of their right to freely express themselves. It is beautiful to see how happy these Iranian women are when they are away from their government and enjoying a little bit more freedom than they usually have.

While many chose to undo their scarfs, others chose to keep it on.

That's what religious freedom is supposed to look like, right? Completely voluntary; no rules that are imposed under the threat of violence by the State.

Tomorrow, June 25th 2018, Iran will play against Portugal. I encourage you to watch the game and pay attention to the short moments when the cameras focus on the crowds, and you'll see nothing but smiles and happiness among Iranian fans! (unless they lose, of course) ;-)

What a nice observation and really thought provoking. We are bound by laws and religious beliefs but when it comes to other things such as world cup, we seem to be united by common cause and it treats us equally regardless of gender or religion.

And to think that before the current regime, it wasn't always this oppressive in Iran. Sigh...

I'm not very familiar with Iranian history, but of course the Middle East in general has seen some gruesome things in the past as well as today.. Thanks for reading!
