To be European is to be humanist.

“Europe has become a popular haven for migrants attempting to follow world’s most lethal sea routes to Spain, to Italy and to Greece. In the desperate attempt to reach safety in Europe, migrants die in the waters of the Mediterranean while E.U. leaders implement measures to drop the number of migrant drawings.” You probably associate this paragraph with “Third World” countries that exist NOT on the European continent. Allow me to define at this point the term “Third World”, which arose not long ago. This phrase describes economically-developing countries that did not align with NATO or the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

However, the above paragraph is associated with more people than you probably think. You see, a number of countries located in the European continent joined the Soviet Union during the Cold War and a large number of Europeans suffered after the collapse of the USSR. Let me give you an example; Albania is located in the Southeastern Europe, bordering the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea. The communist regime and the legacy of an inefficient economic model led to many other factors responsible for the first great exodus of Albanian migrants. During the crisis of 1991, Albanian migrants, both legal and illegal, crossed the sea to Italy and the borders with Greece.

A migrant crisis is an opportunity to learn how to care for each other, to respect and to trust other people. Because we need to understand that we all share more similarities than differences!
