RE: Under Pressure! Managing Deadlines and Work When You're Mostly a Creative Slacker

in #work8 years ago

I tend to over plan for things and create deadlines far into the future that leave people’s mouth ajar and wondering what kind of crazy person was allowed into the area.

For instance when I had a meeting with a guidance consular during my first week in college. I had a 10 year plan worked out. Including all the teachers and classes schedule for just over 2 years at the college. Back up teachers listed, and classes if those filled. Company’s I wanted to work for after graduate, college and programs and professors at those colleges I wanted to be student off after getting 3 years of work related expernice. When I wanted to take my exams to be a CPA after meeting the educational and work requirements (never happened beyond graduating).

The guy was in total shock and just kept nodding his head saying "I never had anyone like you in my office before you will go far." Oddly enough the next day I was emailed about being transferred to another person lol.

My issue is things just never work out. Even when I try and make things as redundant and possible in terms of a deadline as I can.

So when things fail I fall onto back up plans of back up plans. I revaluate every so often and make sure I am doing all I can. I need that schedule and deadline because I always want to do more. It’s the only way I can try and work out how to do everything.

Even here on Steemit, one of the things I keep "pounding" at people every time new changes are proposed is "How is this going to affect us 5 years, 10 years from now?" Which is generally NOT a popular approach... pretty much ANYwhere, because people just care about results now, or so it seems.

I suppose "things don't work out" because the majority lacks the vision-- and bandwidth-- to think in such terms. I can tell myself that my way "makes more sense" in the long run... but if most people don't care, that doesn't amount to a hill of beans, except to the extent I have a minimal amount of control over my own life and plans. So I try to stick with that... and otherwise "lead by example," when that is called for.

I definitely hate the short term minded most world works on. It’s one thing to test stuff out in a small batch with a control group and see how the numbers perform for short term gains. It’s another just too only focus on short term. Everyone always expect that next big thing to be almost be here in their lives that will change everything for the better. These people’s long term thinking tends to be wait for the short term that never happens for them.

While I am fine trying things out for short term in mind. I always want think like you do in long term conditions.
