This small country consists of about 80 islands, spread between New Caledonia and Fiji. Some of the islands are Espirtu Santu (main island), Efate, Malekula, Malo, Pantecost and Tanna. Previously this country known as the New Hebrides, Vanuatu is a new name. Pedro Fernandes (Portugal) was the first to discover this island in 1606. The Vietnamese laborers were then imported in the 20th century to manage agriculture and plantations. The result makes this country a prosperous region. Vanuatu gained independence in 1980. The island's soil surface fluctuates and displays spectacular views of the highlands, the coast and the sea that has stunning rocks.
