AFFIRMATIVE ACTION: Has it Influenced Gender/Race Discrimination?
The U.S. Government had made several attempts to minimize or eliminate segregation for several decades, and Affirmative Action is one of such. It is still difficult to ensure a well-integrated workplace in America today. Segregation, inequality, and discrimination are more of a social problem than political. The United States of America is a country with diverse race, nationality, and ethnic background. Until there is well expressed equal treatment and acceptance exhibited among all, Affirmative Action might be the only option to curb segregation and discrimination in America.
Offering preferential treatment to minority groups might have been an effective means of dealing with inequality in American Universities and Workplace. America must have grown past that era, but the policy to some extent paints the American public as it implies to the rest of the world. Affirmative Action, should not be the criteria for people to treat each other fairly at workplaces and schools. Americans themselves must learn to practice equality in every aspect of life.
According to (NCSL, 2014)After California abolished its affirmative action programs in 1998, Statistics show that the minority student admissions at UC Berkeley dropped to sixty-one percent, and minority admissions at UCLA reduced by thirty-six percent. If Affirmative Action is seen as an enforcer for proper workplace integration, then fewer employers might not be interested in offering employment positions anymore. Probably because, they would be subject to the laws governing Affirmative Action, which may put them in a limited disciplinary action position if need be. The majority of people feel it is an outdated practice that needs to be left out. While minorities fear the worst that could happen if the opportunity to get preferential treatment is taken away.
In conclusion, respectful interactions, employments based on an applicant's capability to contribute towards smooth workflow, efficient delivery, and workplace democratization are tangible key indicators that should be used for determining whether the American Society is well integrated within the workplace - not gender or color.
