WitnessWatch Weekly Report #10: How much do witnesses make?
Have you ever wondered what witnesses make?
STEEM witnesses are the secret sauce that make Steemit function. Every post you submit, transfer you send, and vote you cast are processed by the witnesses. Being a witness is a big responsibility, and the equipment and maintenance can be expensive and time-intensive. Because of this, witnesses are compensated with SP for every "block" of transactions that they process.
The blockchain, through the witnesses, processes 21 blocks of transactions in each 63-second round. The top 19 witnesses get 1 block every round, with the other 2 blocks being distributed among the other active witnesses according to their ranking.
We want to emphasize that witness rewards do not come from the reward pool. As new tokens are created, a certain percentage is distributed to authors and curators, while the witness rewards are distributed from another percentage. They are two separate pots.
We have run a script that has analyzed every block over the last 7 days to calculate what each witness earned over the week. This post was put together using data pulled from @steemsql, thanks to @arcange. We are happy to subscribe to the SteemSql service as it has become infinitely more reliable and we are thrilled to support @arcange's work.
Vitals
STEEM/USD Conversion Rate at time of analysis: $1.97/STEEM
Dates covered by analysis: March 26th - April 1st, 2018
Bar Chart
This bar chart shows the distribution of SP earned by witnesses over the last week.
As you can see, the earnings drop off significantly for those that aren't in the top 20. This is due to the fact that the top 20 witnesses handle the bulk of the transactions that occur on the STEEM blockchain. Because of this, their overhead is significantly higher, especially as the blockchain continues to grow.
Pie Charts
We have reorganized our pie chart visualizations into earning tiers. This will allow a much clearer picture of the way earnings are distributed to the various witnesses.
Tier 1: Top 20
Tier 2: 21-40
Tier 3: 41-60
Tier 4: 61-80
Tier 5: 81-100
Tier 6: Under 100
Full Table
Here is the full table of results, this totals all witness earnings in SP and the USD equivalent over the last week, sorted by each witness' ranking.

Will it be possible to see if "dead"users did vote on somebody ?
It would be possible, to do that we would have to define dead users. That would be an interesting analytic to use for a number of things.
How about you add the server specs for each Witness and seed node specs and backup server specs!
That is information that would help people make decisions.
Great suggestion! We are hoping to do that in the future. Unfortunately, that information will need to be manually aggregated as there is really no way to pull that data.
Yep, just go through their updates and type them into the table.
i.e. three columns:
Server Node Backup
and type in the stats you find, after all it is the responsibility of every witness to relay this information via updates.
Don't think that you shall lose too much time on this, maybe a few afternoons of scrolling through the walls of witnesses.
Likewise, I would suggest that you add the following site as a much better option for voting in witnesses:
https://steemian.info/witnesses
Unlike the one you listed, this one is informative and fair, it literally shows all the servers out there, both dead and running.
Likewise the voting option is as simple as clicking on the "Thumbs up" and approving it, unlike the link that you supplied where people have to write in names of Witnesses who are not in the top 50.
Just telling it as it is.
Want to get the relevant information out, then this is it.
What is the mechanism that this site uses for voting? I think users would be concerned about using a posting or active key on an unknown site.
Steem Connect.
Very interesting and informative all this, I really did not know that they were the processors and that they had so much work and were so important for the operation of steemit
Yes, the witnesses do a lot of the heavy lifting behind the scenes. In addition, they are responsible for a lot of the third-party infrastructure as well. Things like SteemSQL, Steemdata, Utopian, etc. wouldn't be possible without the witnesses.
Wow the difference between the top 20 and the following witnesses is a lot more massive than I would have thought. I expected a smoother decrease, but that's because of the limited knowledge I have on the matter. Definitely an interesting compilation of information! Thanks!
