Becoming an Effective Leader #5
Hi Steemian,
The more I spend time compiling my notes on this book, the more I realize that the leadership lessons are best practices every human must follow. I see them as a mathematical formula that could be applied to everyone’s life without making every person the same. This is what makes life life; the fact that we are all different. But I wonder how the world would be if there was no anger… no negativity... can it be? Would it be better? Or do we need these positive and negative energies? In physics and literature, a negative and a negative creates positive. So is the positivity we get a result of the negatives that exist? What are your thoughts?
The lessons outlined by this book are only a guide that helps us practice the foundations of leadership. To see the results of your efforts, a leader must be patient and committed to his/her efforts. We all know that nothing meaningful comes easy in life. Some people expect fast results but fruits and flowers flourish when they are ready.
In leadership, change is something that must occur continuously. By changing your behaviour and experimenting with the fundamental principles, you improve your skills. Hence, always keep in mind that the only person you can change is yourself.
To change, and ultimately be a leader, you must be motivated. According to James Hunter the definition of motivation is any communication that influences choice. As leaders we can provide the necessary friction but people must make their own choice to change.
An example of what a good leader can do is to think of a garden and a farmer. As a farmer, the best you can do is only provide the right environment for growth. The actual growth is out of our hands. In this quest, it is important to remember ‘positive change comes from positive behaviour’.
The expression ‘fake it till you make it’ is an excellent way to make this a lifestyle; the changed feelings will follow behavior. This expression could also be defined as Praxis. In other words, if I make a commitment to love and extend myself for those I serve, and align my actions and behaviors to that commitment, positive regard will follow.
