[Whisky Guide for Novices] Which glass should I use? Tumbler, Glencairn or Nosing Glass?

In the first two episodes of our small [Whisky Guide for Novices] we talked about what whisky is and how to drink it. Now we need to know what glass we should use. 

Different glasses, different use cases

In general you can distinguish three different kind of glasses. 

• TUMBLER

We all know the tumbler from our nights out in our favorite bars and clubs. The tumbler has a thick bottom which isolates the temperature of your whisky. It is ideal for putting your whisky on the rocks or adding some coke or soda. 

The problem: Through the big aperture of the glass a lot of flavour literally flys away. 

You can use this kind of glass for Bourbon Whiskies and Blend Whiskies. Please don't use it for Single Malt Whiskies. ;) 

• NOSING GLASS

The nosing glass with its stem and its small aperture is ideal for the tasting of Single Malt Whiskies because of their special flavour which can't fly away that easy through the small opening of the glass. Nosing glasses are usually made of high sparkle so you can see the true color of your whisky. [1]

• GLENCAIRN GLASS

Experts might know it: The Glencairn glass is said to be the best glass to enjoy your whisky. It looks like a tulip but has a thick bottom. With the bellied form the flavour of your whisky can unfold itself in the best way. 

Now you will always have the knowledge which glass you should take.
