[Whisky Guide for Novices] How to store your Whisky at home

in #whisky8 years ago

Welcome to a new episode of our [Whisky Guide for Novices]. Today we want to resolve the question how to store your Whisky at home.

How to store your Whisky at home

First we need to differentiate if you want to store your drinking whisky (see I.) or your whisky as an investment (see II.).

The difference is easy to see: One time you have an open bottle, the other time you have a sealed one.

In general you should store your whisky standing up and in a dark place. The reason for this is that the cork is not leakproof and the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight affects the taste. So just leave your bottles in the boxes you bought your whisky in.

I. Whisky for drinking

If you have a look at the FAQs' of the biggest distilleries they will always recommend to drink your whisky within six months after opening the bottle.

One reason of course is that they want to sell more bottles but the second reason is usefull, too. Oxygen in your opened bottle can affect the taste in a bad way. But this is very different form whisky to whisky. Some are not palatable anymore, others get better or stay the same.

ADVICE: Put your whisky into a smaller bottle after drinking some glasses so that there is fewer oxygen in your small bottle. Others put marbles out of glass into their bottles. Of course they should be neutral in taste.

II. Whisky as an investment

If you see your bottles as an investment and you leave them sealed you should put your bottles together with the boxes into the dark. Otherwise they bleach out which leads to a depreciation.

You also should make sure that your bottles stand in a dry place so nothing can get moldy.

The temperature should be around 8-16 degree. The best temperature is said to be at 15 degree.

 Enjoy responsibly!
