Why is the price of Wheat going up so much?
- $381.50 is the price of wheat per ton globally.
- $275 was the price at the start of this year.
- A 38.5% price increase in under six months.
In 2021, the world consumed 783 million tons of wheat, with it being one of the biggest food sources on the planet.
Why did the price go up so much?
- Russia produces 11% of wheat globally.
- Ukraine produces 3%.
- 19% of wheat exports are from Russia.
- 9% are from Ukraine.
For wheat exports, 28% globally are from two countries which it’s currently impossible to trade with.
For the US, we only produce 6.5% of wheat globally, which in 2019 was reported at being 51.3 million tons of wheat.
And wheat is just one category.
- Ukraine is 13% of global corn exports.
- 84% of sunflower oil.
- 30-70% of rapeseed for all European countries.
- 18% of Barley.
Everyone is now talking about oil and the need to curve prices there, but very few are discussing how the Russia/Ukraine War is going to impact food supply issues long term, unless there’s a real effort to grow more food and produce more in the US, Europe and Latin America.
Also, this is just a taste of how bad things would get if we ever had a similar conflict and had to end trade with a country like China.
