What You Might Not Know About Hugging
There really isn't enough that can be said about what hugging can do for you and for your health; mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. The best part of hugging is you don't even need another person to experience the benefits! Hugging a teddy bear or a pillow is still really good for your health! Although, admittedly, hugging your significant other, a good friend, grandchild, a pet or a parent really does make the experience so much more beneficial. The reason hugs are better when you engage with another being is because, a positive energy is created when the two come together with the intention of love, compassion, empathy, etc. This also creates added benefits for both beings engaged in the embrace due to the positive doubling of the energy.
Some people think of hugs as a give and receive, but really it is a give-give, receive-receive, exchange. While one person may initiate the hug, the receiver, and giver will benefit from the reciprocation. Thus, the thinking that receiving hugs is the only way to benefit from one. Giving them has just as much impact as receiving! Good news!!
The benefits of hugging, beyond the immediate gratification of the release of Oxycontin in the brain, can strengthen the immune system as well as boost self esteem. But wait, it doesn't end there! Hugging relaxes muscles, balances the nervous system, helps your white blood cell count normalize, and builds trust and a sense of safety between the two parties.
The best hugs are the ones where the two people are able to put their hearts together (anatomically facing each other, directly). This is thought to activate the Solar Plexius Chakra (the chakra that gives us the ability to be in control of our lives and have confidence). It can also be seen as a type of meditation that induces happiness as long as we remain in the moment. So, long hugs are the best hugs. Lastly, hugs teach us how to give and receive love and all of us can use a little love sprinkled throughout our days.
Now, go out and hug someone today! Hug a bunch of people! Hug your pets, hug a pillow, it doesn't really matter, just hug and enjoy the smile it brings to your face and soul!
