Flooding in Alberta Update

in #weather6 years ago (edited)

We have made it through that worst of the melt.  We still have a small amount of snow in the bush but for the most part the snow is gone.  Within one month we went from -9 to +26.  This year we really didn't have much spring weather.

The ducks are enjoying siwmming through the water on the dugout.  We are watching to see if the water is going to stick around.  Our soil is very sandy and usually all the water drains away.

The chickens are really enjoying getting out and eat all of the hay that is left behind.  The chickens free range and spend most of their time outdoors.  This makes egg collection fun.  I spend quite a bit of time wandering around looking for nests of eggs.  We have a weasel steeling the eggs right now so it is my job to get to the eggs before it does.

The ducklings are growing well.  They are getting so big.  I have learned that we can't let them get close to deep water for at least another month.  I thought ducks just new how to swim but the reading I have done is they need to get some more fat on their bodies so they will be able to swim.

This is Sugar.

This is Elle.

Of course I love my goats.  Here are my two mama's.  We are waiting for kids to come.  Their bodies are showing all the signs that they are ready to kid out but they need to do it on their own time.  I didn't actually see when they got pregnant.  So we need to just watch and wait.  Waiting is hard.

Good morning Carey! Glad to see you've made it through the melt. Been thinking of your homestead. Sugar and Elle are just so sweet! Glad they waited till it's warmer to have their babies. They sure do look like they are getting ready! The ducklings are SO sweet too! Great to see an update from you! Much love! Have a wonderful day ❤7

How have you been doing? I have been thinking about you lately. Yes the goats sure are large, it will be so good to see those babies. I am sure they are getting uncomfortable as well.

The ducklings are cute. We can't touch them though. The mama is great at protecting them. She attack and it sure does hurt.

Have a wonderful day as well.

🤣 watch out for the attack momma! Those momma instincts are strong!! I am just getting in to see dentist #2....pls wish me luck. My mouth is in shambles. But, it will get fixed. Thanks so much for checking in Carey ❤

Oh a dentist. I hope it was a good experience. It seems no matter how much we try to improve our western diet we still seem to have an issue or two.

Yes those mamas are pretty good on the attacK. Rob was bit a couple of times. The ducks look all nice and cute until you come too close.

Have a great day

Looks like it is about to get really busy there! I cant wait to see the kids (I am hoping for some birthing pictures lol) I also took it foregranted that ducks could swim straight away! I am excited to follow your journey on the homestead, hopefully picking up some tips for the future if I am blessed enough to be in a similar position! Oh and I love your goats too :D

Yes we will be quite busy here. It might start as soon as tomorrow. Today is cloudy and cold. The garden will begin to get too big for the house pretty soon. I keep planting and planting. I might have gone over board. Oh well.

Yes I really thought that ducks just were born and knew how to swim right away. I am so glad that I did some research before I took them to water.

The journey on the homestead is going to be fun to document. I decided that is what I will use this platform for. It might be cool to look back at it all.

Thanks for stopping in.

Sugar is so unique with her lop-sided horns. And Elle is just huge! I love the ducks. Looks like you guys will be enjoying duck for holiday dinners. Nice!

Yes they all have their personality and it really does show. Duck might be interesting for dinner.

I don't love goats... But I love goat milk... hehe
My mom tells me she was sick when I was a baby and she was giving me goat milk instead of her milk... Because goat milk is good for kids...
have a nice time @carey-page

Glad you like goat milk. I love goat milk, I think it is the best. Good your mom was able to get some goats milk for you.

Thanks for stopping by. Have an awesome day.

Ooooooooooo!!! What great pictures!! Love how spring looks at your place!!
I think we are a week behind you!
Does your hay come in cubes? That's a big wall of hay!
Avia loves the ducklings! She says the momma 'just needs to be hugged every day...lol tough love' i want pictures of that!!! Bahaha ...She asked if your goats will have twins? Because they are huge! She says...lol
Thanks so much for the glimpse. Hoping the snow leaves soon... its warming up, raining.... it won't be long.
Love to you all!

You missed spring! Crazy Canadian weather. Mama ducks are ferocious. Chickens not so bad. We can handle the little ones but not the ducks or geese. Can't wait to see photos of your goats! Kids are so darned cute! I am glad that you guys didn't get any more flooding. High water is no fun...

Yes we went right to summer. Oh well that is how it is here.

Yes Rob has been bitten by mama duck. He was trying to pick up a little one and show some family.

We have two baby goats born. You are right they are so cute. Here is a picture of the first ones.

Maybe the kids you are with will enjoy the pictures. Hope you are doing good.

I think we still have our sanity! It is good to see the kids at peace. They aren't as stressed out. Perhaps it is because the parents aren't as upset as they were before feeling a little more secure.

It is good that you and the people you are with are together. It is nice to have a community to be together in times like this. It seems to make it easier on everyone. Having extra hands and minds to get everything done.
