How Ms Janet and her 3 kids was saved from trekking 4 kilometres everyday

It is now a fact that sub-Saharan Africa suffers a greater level of water stress than many regions in the world. This is as a result of several factors which includes mismanagement of resources, corruption, lack of environmental research and urban infrastructure.

Fetching water from the river is still a major drinking water source in many regions of the continent.

Until 3 months ago, Janet and her three children had to trek 4 kilometres each day to a river to get about 170 litres of water for drinking, cooking, washing and making apku for commercial sales to sustain the family.

Janet had expressed the hurdles in having to walk 4 kilometres every day with 170 litres jerry can full of water to the brim every day.

According to her, the kids miss the most productive hours of lessons in school while trying to get their first task of the day done.

“The water pump has improved our lives,” Ms Janet told Hope Spring Water. “Now we can easily access clean water without having to trek more than 4 kilometres to get water contaminated by human faeces and urine. Not only has the water pump saved her household a considerable time and stress, but her kids get to spend the most productive parts of their day receiving lessons at school.

Residents of the communities are also happy and grateful to Hope Spring water for providing the water pump. Instead of trekking far distances to get water, residents of the communities could just easily get access to clean water by lining up their jerry cans and buckets in order of needs.

Ms Janet and members of her community are fortunate to get a clean water pump within their immediate environment. Most African communities are not as fortunate as they are. In most cases, more than half of a remote household do not have access to clean water, they only rely on water sources that are very unhealthy. In some of the countries in the region of Africa, the situation seems a bit better in the urban areas, where about 62 per cent of the population can access clean water, though more than half of the cities house does not have stable tap water in their house.

Africa leaders recently declared their commitment to achieving universal access to clean water through their support for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted in 2020, yet the situation hasn’t experienced a significant change, instead, the situation is currently deteriorating as about 3.4 million people, mostly children, die annually from water-related diseases.

In Africa, about 6 billion people have no acceptable means of sanitation.
