Walk With Me: The Houses Found On Harbour Island, Bahamas
Please put your comfortable walking shoes on (or at the very least imagine doing so). I’m going to take you on a tour around Harbour Island so that you can See What I See.
Most of the homes on the island have been there for a really long time (some well over 250 years). As such, they have survived countless tropical storms.
When any building occurs, most of the materials have to be brought to the island from other islands or countries. This means that people generally try to keep their houses in descent repair and they work with what they’ve got. I observed a lot of “fixing” instead of automatically disposing of and replacing with “new”.
This is what makes the houses on the island so charming
(At least in my humble opinion, anyway.)
Not once did I see apartment buildings or cookie-cutter subdivisions. Most homes are single, stand-alone dwellings with yards filled with interesting trees, plantings and flowers.
Have a look at the thorns on the stem of this flowering plant (in the photo above). Or, this enormous clump of grass (in the photo below).
(I didn’t crop the picket fence out of the photo so that you would have a sense for how tall and wide this planting is.)
Every size and shape of house had equally representation. What they all seemed to have in common and share were the use of bright colours, shutters and house names, instead of house numbers.
Lets have a look...
This gem, has a Buddha on its first set of stairs which holds space on its landing. You can feel the serenity as it encourages you to breathe a little deeper.
Deckadance, I bet the deck is beautiful and that it is big enough to dance on.
If the green colour of this house doesn’t put a smile on your face...you cannot be influenced by the island magic.
Further down the road and around the bend...
I can show you a shell of a house that is being built and you can see that it’s being constructed with cement blocks.
It doesn’t look like there’s any particular hurry to finish this project.
There are still lots for sale but they require clearing...
(3/4 of a million, in case you are curious.)
Here’s some other homes and cottages that caught my eye:
Mature Gardens And Meticulously Landscaped
Cute Little Palm Tree Focal Point
Functional Shutters To Keep The Porch Cool
Cascading Flowers And A Picket Fence Are The Stuff Of Fairytales
The Doll House
All cute as buttons even though some are monstrous.
I can’t help but think, if only their walls could talk.
I welcome your comments and I invite you to follow me on my journey...one neighbourhood at a time. ;)

Beautiful photos Rebecca thanks for the tour! I think one day we will be able to crowdfund and buy our own steem island :)
That's the best idea yet @owenwat! I'll chip in on that particular project because I think it's a fantastic concept of sharing resources to make a beautiful life for ourselves.
We would have fields full of beautiful cannabis trees and everyone on the island would have jobs to do to keep the place running. I'm gonna be dreaming about it in bed tonight :-)
i feel i am walking with you through your photo.
An interesting excursion turned out, I think the locals do not hurry up with the quality repair of houses, because they are often visited by urogans. Domics are small but cozy. Especially liked the doll house. Thanks for an interesting walk Rebecca.
I really dig the vibe that the island has with the unique homes and landscaping. I like how you described it as how you didn't see the typical cookie-cutter type homes in the area. These homes pictured definitely have character and soul.
