MORE PRODUCTIVITY WITH MY TO-DO LIST ( Wafrica Guest Post )
Many Africans belong to homes where a lot of things happen in no particular order. Without some measuring cylinder or weighing balance, mother just knows how much quantity of oil or pinch of salt that would be needed for the soup. They had an alarm inside of them that sounded as a reminder of some sort, mother knows what time to prepare dinner for the family. Otherwise, the children must have slept before she's done cooking. The village people knew what time to get to the river to get clean water.
With modernization, technology and literacy levels, a lot has changed from the traditional systems. People have learnt and devised means to help them through certain tasks. A lot of which has become external. An alarm clock for instance, serves as a reminder that it is time for a particular task. Maybe to wake up, and get set for work before the start of traffic like it happens in Lagos, Nigeria. But today, I would be talking about a to-do list.
Have you heard the saying that a short pen is better than a long memory? Yes that is true.We all have those days when there are a million things to do, and we don't know how we're going to get it all done. It's easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of tasks that we must do from day to day. Between family, work, other responsibilities and personal obligations, life can get really stressful, and it’s even more stressful when you forget something really important.
Recently, a friend was telling me how unproductive his days had been. He had lots of things to do but he didn't know why it was difficult getting through it. Sometimes, he forgets to make important calls. I suggested that he gets a plan for his itinerary for every day. By creating an organized to-do lists, you can prioritize the things you need to do, keep track of what still needs to be finished, and feel productive and prepared in all areas of your life.
Because of the way I was brought up, everything has to be organized. In my house for instance, we have a time table for food for the entire week. The difference between a time table and a to-do list is that a time table is a list of the activities you do regularly (like a school timetable), while a to-do list comprises of the things you’ve got on your plate everyday or a particular week. The principles are basically the same. I've been cooking same thing over the years that finally the time table got stuck to my brains. Without checking, I just know that every Saturday mornings, it's usually bean cake (akara) with pap or custard. Even while living alone, I've learnt to have my personal time table for meals for several reasons.
In order to be able to follow a to-do-list through, it's important that we write down our goals. Even God told the prophet Habakkuk to write down the vision. Each time you pick up your pen to write down something, some how you're bound to remember it.

With a to-do list, you're able to allot specific amount of time to a particular task to ensure that you finish up what's on your plate. Your to-do list will help you focus your attention on tasks that are most important at the moment. Remember that what is really important is setting up your priorities. Bring thingsthat are more important to you forward before concentrating the left over time to less important things. By so doing, you'll cut down on unnecessary things and so be able to manage your time.
So, start making your to-do lists today. You'll soon be less stressed, more organized, more productive and with more time in your hands.

I dont really like todo lists. This is because most times things don't just add up. I prefer going through the day doing as much as i can and leaving the rest till tomorrow. Most times, i'd say 'when class finishes by 12 , i'll go to market and come back by 2.". Sometimes the lecturer delays class till 12:30 and i end up going to market late and coming back much later than planned.
So i just prefer going through the day without todo lists.
The whole idea of the to-do list is to help you keep track of your activities, giving attention to what is most important at the moment and helping you remember where you left off the previous day. For me it brings a lot of organization and adds beauty to our work cos we will be mindful of details.
Our productivity in life is hinged on several factors. One of it is getting an organized plan that suits us and that we can follow through. Take this simple step of writing down your itinerary for the day and you'll accomplish more than you can imagine.
