Easy Road days [Self poem]

Society has its ways, its standards and its rules
I used to think that those who followed them were fools
Much better to accept and just love your individuality
But perhaps I'm advocating the wrong mentality
Sometimes walking the easy road seems more tempting
Being you is not enough experience is suggesting
Because clearly in this world you must find a way to blend in
Being different never strikes the right balance of attention
So perhaps I should change my identification strategy
Alter and eliminate the peculiar half of me
Maybe I should try to make my flaws dissipate
Until I become an example of everything I hate
I should really attempt some behaviour modification
To see if the people and atmosphere around me changes
Might be able to make heads turn if I'm a little more obnoxious
If I embrace impulsion and leave no room for being cautious
Maybe I'll stop thinking and just throw my intellect away
It's all about entertainment not people with interesting things to say
Can't make time to read or engage in profound topics
It's way too hard to even care about basic politics
I could just care a little less until I learn to fit the mold
Follow the lead and do exactly what I'm told
Shift personality till I'm precisely what they want
Forget about who I am and only remember what they taught
I'll be recognized and known for my revamped reflection
Pretend to be what I'm not give off a false perception
Who cares if I embody a cloak of lies and deception?
At least I've done what's required for acceptance
All that matters is I find a way to mark my place
No one will ever notice the parts of me that have gone to waste
And with my newly shaped self created and embraced
I'll make everyone believe the illusion with a smiling face

But I'd rather look back on my youth in my old age
Knowing that this was just an off and on phase
When you tire of life testing your natural living ways
It's hard not to sit and wish for easy road days.
