Drinking a cup of tea or a handful of berries a day reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. This conclusion was made by scientists of the University of Western Australia, reports Live Science.

Experts analyzed data on 53 thousand people who took part in a long-term study, launched in the 90s. Volunteers completed a food questionnaire in which they indicated which foods they ate and how often.

The health of the subjects was monitored for 23 years. At the expiration of this period, 12,000 participants developed irregularities in the work of the heart.

It turned out that volunteers who consumed about 500 milligrams of flavonoids per day had a lower risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral artery disease.

At the same time, the required amount of flavonoids with anti-inflammatory properties is contained in a cup of tea, blueberries and other products. However, smoking and drinking alcohol increase the amount of flavonoids needed to achieve a beneficial effect.

Earlier, scientists have found that green tea is effective in combating bone marrow cancer, and fruit tea has proved to be harmful to health.
