Garden Secret: Planting Seeds on the Full Moon (VLOG)

in #vlog7 years ago (edited)

Waxing and Waning, Rising and Falling, Expanding and Condensing.

In this video we go over some of the reasons we like to plant by the moon and are choosing today as a day to plant the remainder of our potatoes, some ground nuts and spring seeds!!

The full moon is a time that is full of energy, and a great time for seeding because germination rates increase and there is more moisture in the Earth. Just as the moon effects tides, so it does for all water, including the water in the soil. This cosmic reminder of the interconnectedness is just one of the things we LOVE about living a Earth centered lifestyle.

Aligning with the Moon

Syncing our planting up with the moon is an ancient practice observed by a wide variety of cultures throughout time. Even before agriculture, humans have synced their activities with the lunar cycles. This is quite a logical concept as we are all connected and part of a much larger organism (Gaia or Earth) and therefore influenced by larger bodies such as the moon and planets.

This may seem a little far fetched, but consider the effect the moon has on water. Think of the monumental shifts in tides, the ever pulsing, shifting and changing force. The moon exerts influence on watery forces, and when you consider water as an essential component of life, it becomes clear that there is much wisdom in syncing up with celestial rhythms such as the moon cycle.

The easily observable cycle of the waxing and waning of the moon is a great place to start connecting actions and planting schedules with cosmic rhythms. The new moon to full moon cycle is just one of the several cycles the moon passes through, not to mentioned the other planetary forces.

Biodynamic Agriculture

Biodynamic agriculture is perhaps the most evolved and complex system of mapping and understanding the cosmic influences on life. It takes into account the various lunar rhythms and includes the effects of planets.

Inspired by a series of lectures delivered by Rudolph Steiner in Austria in the 1920s, it has since grown into a global community of practitioners and philosophers that focus on the subtle and etherial forces the celestial bodies have on organisms. The bare bones of it is that throughout the lunar cycles, there are rising and expanding forces that counteract the falling and condensing forces. The new moon to full moon cycles demonstrate this quite simply. As the moon waxes (1st to 2nd quarter) the lunar forces (those primarily responsible for influencing water) begin to expand and rise. This expansion culminates during the full moon period and cycles through the waning phase (3rd to 4th quarter) where the forces fall and contract and the cycle begins again.

What are the ways you like to remember your connection to the cosmos?

So I won't be the only one planting tonight! Somewhere between 10:30 and 11 o'clock tonight, the big beautiful pink moon will rise above the trees and shine upon my the growing bed along the back of the house. I'll be there planting purple coneflower. The crop should make for some strong healing tea for next years cold season.

Oh wow fernowl sounds like an amazingly connected healing cosmic ritual!! Thank you for sharing 🌝💛💛💛mmm I can feel the sacredness here and it lights me up inside with that holy moon glow xo wren

yessssssss you two!!!!!! pure BD joy!!!!!!!! gosh i love you what ya'll share!!!!!! thank you from my heart!!!! planting seeds on the full moon...mmmmmmm!!!!!!

HECK YES! GROCKED! So joyous to hear and share resonance. A hearty and heartfelt welcome from my heart <3. It is this type of feedback that feeds the soul and reminds us both that we're on the right path. It seems there is much kindredness between us all! Blessed Moonday(aka monday)

I tried to follow the biodynamic lunar calendar planting last season, but we had so much unhelpful weather that I lost heart, tbh, after a while. But I am determined to try again next season. :)

I've always loved the idea of biodynamics above all other systems.

I can TOTALLY relate to weather being an event changer. Love that you've been exposed and played around with BD. I often think, I'll get that planted this day no prob. But life happens and it's not always possible. It can for sure be tough to schedule all plant activities according to the calendar no doubt. What I like most about it is being connected to something bigger than ourselves and remembering the cosmic nature of reality. For me, the calendar is somewhat like a touchstone piece to bring that awareness in, not a rigid thing that must be obeyed.

That's right, not just where you plant who should see a good day. but in my place too.
