HMP virus 🦠= 🚫 school and activities in 2025
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus causing flu-like symptoms such as cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. While it typically leads to mild illness, it can result in severe respiratory conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Recently, there has been a surge in HMPV cases in China, especially among children under 14 in northern provinces. This increase has led to crowded hospitals and raised public concern. Chinese health authorities have implemented emergency measures to monitor and manage the spread, emphasizing that such respiratory infections are common during winter.
In India, two infants in Bengaluru—a three-month-old girl and a six-month-old boy—have tested positive for HMPV. Both had a history of bronchopneumonia; the girl has been discharged, and the boy is recovering. Additionally, a two-month-old boy in Ahmedabad has contracted the virus. India's Union Health Ministry has stated there is no link between these cases and those reported in China, noting that HMPV is already in circulation globally, including in India.
Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV. Preventive measures include regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and maintaining good respiratory hygiene. Health authorities advise the public not to panic but to remain vigilant and adhere to standard precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory infections.
