A new Android malware has been spotted on the Play Store. Named Soraka, the malware is hidden in the code of 104 apps found on Google's store. In total, they have been downloaded by more than 4.6 million internet users worldwide in recent months.

On December 19, 2019, cybersecurity researchers at White Ops Threat Intelligence revealed the presence of 104 fraudulent Android apps on the Play Store. A virus called Soraka (a Russian name derived from slang) was indeed identified in the application code. Its sole purpose is to display intrusive advertisements on the screen of its victims ' smartphones. The malware is even able to display ads on a screen in standby or locked. With adwares of this kind, hackers generate advertising revenue in record time.

More elaborate than the latest advertising malware spotted on Android, Soraka is able to hide its presence vis-à-vis detection systems. "Fraudsters are getting smarter-they know it's an arms race now, so they're trying to slow down the analysis with tactics. We are seeing more and more tricks of concealment, " White Ops researcher John Laycock told fellow Forbes. For example, Soraka waits a certain amount of time after the installation to flood the victim with advertisements. In addition, the malware is able to stop the appearance of ads if a detection system is running.

The list of 104 infected Android apps
Most of the Soraka-containing apps were uploaded to the Play Store just a few months ago, usually around September 2019. However, researchers estimate that the malware has quickly managed to infiltrate 4.6 million Android smartphones. Before installing an unknown application, you are advised to check if the package name is not in the list below :
