Oculus GO - The rise of mainstream VR?

////////////
\\\\\\\\\\\\

As you may have heard already, the all-in-one portable VR headset from Oculus just launched this very week. But it isn't meant to replace high end VR gaming on PC.

VR has come a long way. The first head mounted displays with stereoscopic images were built a long time ago. Always accompanied by scientific enthusiasm, experimentation and virtual experiences. Not for consumers. And now a whole VR system fits right into your bag, ready to be taken anywhere.

As an Oculus Rift user, I see some good use cases for this affordable option. The way we interact over media. Having met far away friends via WebKicks, MSN, Skype, Teamspeak, Discord for the longest time, nothing provided the feeling of meeting someone in person like those multiplayer experiences within the Rift.

Moving, waving, talking and joking around. The only negative thing being that VR is quite a niche and only few... okay, maybe two or three of my friends have a VR setup of their own.

Maybe we will stop using group calls and text based chat rooms all together within an few years. Maybe things are beginning to change with the Oculus GO. Once everyone is able to join into the experience on a low budget?

What do you think? Does VR has what it takes to become mainstream at the current state of technology?

...or will it fail before anyone even notices?
