Diary of a (handy?)man
I do wonder what people might think of me if they see this snapshot of my living room:
If one picture is 1000 words definitely a car's hood infront of vinyl LPs help on that. Especially since both show different uses of vinyl (read below).
Obviously so many people added lockdown projects in their lives during this COVID19 gloom and one of mine had to to with vinyl wrapping my car's hood. Never done any before but since I trust my hands I decided to give it a shot. Surprise surprise, it was much tougher than I thought.
The warm up I did on my laptop didn't prepare me enough for that:
Before:
After:
Kinda like it!
I started with the intention to do it all outdoors with the hood in place. It didn't take too long to realise that any curve in 3 dimensions was a challenge. Numerous times after bad attempts the vinyl got various distorted spots that for a moment I considered impossible to recover. I managed to save them with the use of a heat gun but it was obvious that I couldn't finish the hole thing outdoors under the sun. Only option left was to take the hood off. And so I did...with the piece of vinyl partially flying on it...solo:
Not easy without any help but desperation does wonders. It took me hours to finish it in my living room and I'm not proud of the result but looks fine unless you're really close:
and better than before:
Especially if I do the roof as well but now I have to detox after the PITA this gave to me. It reminds me in a way of some tough times I had during my motorcycle trips abroad: I wouldn't do it if I knew how tough it would be but I'm more than happy I did. Which actually confirms the following:
"The right doses of fear define a nice living"
Too much and you don't live. Too little and you may die. Funny how almost every little thing in life can offer valuable lessons isn't it?
P.S. If you need advises on vinyl wrapping ask me in the comments below. Now I can offer some :)
