Unit Rig Lectra Haul M-100

in #video5 years ago

This Unit Rig Lectra Haul Model M-100 first started at US Borax mine in June 1965. After 30 years of working at the mine, hauling that heavy borax, he retired in June 1995. After his retirement party he found him self sitting at the Pioneer Park. It that moment he desisted that he will spend the rest of his days watching cars drive by the park.

Unit Rig was a successful maker of off-highway dump trucks, sold under the brand name of Lectra Haul. The name come from's their electric drive system. The power plant is a two-stroke Detroit Diesel 12v149 that's puts out 1000 horse power. Engine has bore and stroke 5.75-by-5.75-inch with overhead camshafts, and 4 turbos.

During his prime he could haul a 100 tons in its large yellow dump box. I would like to give you the hours on the engine, but it seems like it has turned over a few times over the years. It's sitting at 113.7 hours.

The Engine makes DC power that goes to the General Electric DC Powered Electric Wheel Motors to move the truck. There is no storage batteries for extra power the diesel will ramp up more speed to make more current, over all the eng rpm is mostly steady, so that helps keep the Engine from wearing out to soon.

Now they were not the first to do this, the Dart company, in the USA, manufactured the first diesel-electric drive coal hauler in year 1939. There was even batter powered delivery trucks running around Chicago, IL back then.

One thing that is new is the AC electric-drive system is getting more and more popular as a drive system in surface mining equipment.

There is one more thing that they have been trying, SR Hybrid Drive Systems. The SR system employs the principle of magnetic attraction to move the motor’s rotor from pole to pole creating rotation.

Unit Rig has a truck that they have design and built for the intent for a min 8000 hours operation per year. This 8000 hours of operation would mean it was working over 92% of the time without stopping. So how did they do, well they successfully proved it. Now if other company could make other things that reliable, maybe we would have less waste?

You can find the Goodyear Brake Assembly on this truck to help it come to a stop. Tire size is 24.00 x 49.

Lectra Haul was sold then later sold again to a company was bought out by Caterpillar Inc. around June 2011.
