Living In The Darkness
Although this seems like a title for a film, it's actually the real life of the people of Venezuela. It wasn't enough with taking away food, medicine, and medical care from the citizens. Now they're forced to endure hours and hours without electricity. There are even cities that spend days without it.
In a modern world, where electricity or any kind of power source is of high importance, it is daunting to image a place where this is not even guaranteed. Some might say that it happens in other regions, but they don't have the resources Venezuela has. Even after all the horrendous corruption during the last 20 years, there are still resources to maintain a whole continent!!!
But unfortunately, the people of that beaten region has gone back to the ancient times, where humans lived in caves. Now the tyranny are making them used to it as some of them have about food and medicine.
It's unacceptable to let this happen... because it's not just another service that they are taking away, it's another slap on the face to the dignity of the people. Certainly, many protest and raise their voice, but everything ends up falling short since it requires more than that.
How can any government thrive without daily production
With no electricity, it is hard to imagine how they can move on. What is easy to imagine are the consequences... because a nation where people don't go to work, children don't go to school and business owners who have to maintain their business closed, the economy (if any - I will deepen on this on a future post) is practically zero. And that's the worst of all because there's no production, no plan for a prosper future.
This information is overlooked by the majority of the Venezuelan people who along all these years have kept inside a circle of ignorance, as if they were preparing them for this moment of continuous darkness.
That's why some people fear that this new humiliation can settle down in the minds of the citizens, who tend to deal with this kind of nightmares differently - much more indulgent - from other communities and societies.
Bowing down the head
Sadly, there are signs of surrender among people, or let me just put it in another way, signs of conformity. This last trait has been of recurrent behavior throughout all these years regarding quality of life. And it would be a shame that people don't have a single shred of dignity and self respect anymore.
I hope this is just a moment of tiredness, that the "inner energies" are getting recharged in order to come again stronger and more determined to do what's right for them.
And what's for now
In the meantime, Venezuelans are improvising to light up their houses in order not to buy candles every single day because their poor minimal wage salary drift away in a blink of an eye.
They are also lamenting because their old home appliances are getting broken when the sudden blackouts happen. And "who pays for them," an outsider observant might ask.
Well, NOBODY!!!
This is just the tip of the iceberg of the current Venezuela situation. Darkness reigns over most of the towns. But if the cave man dared to step outside to face light, Venezuelan people can step out to fight and win their freedom.
