Vegan cheesesteak

in #vegan7 years ago

I've been eating a plant-based diet since Thanksgiving and saw a recipe for a seitan cheesesteak and immediately started craving it. I bought a nice Portuguese roll and made my own seitan. I chose to skip the cheese because I don't want to eat too much fake food. I fried up some onions, peppers, and mushrooms, along with the seitan and served it up with a bit of ketchup. I devoured it! Was it as good as a genuine Philly Cheesesteak? No, but pretty good nonetheless. IMG_6490.JPG

I had never heard of seitan before this post. It's basically just wheat gluten from my understanding? Where do you get it - Or is it something you make?

In any case, this looks delicious! I've been meaning to cut down on my red meat intake. Finding tasty vegan alternatives like this is probably a great starting point.

Thanks for posting :)

Here's a basic recipe to make your own seitan: https://www.vegetariantimes.com/recipes/homemade-seitan
You may be able to find ready to eat/prepare seitan in your local supermarket. It's pretty much used as a meat substitute. I've had buffalo seitan instead of chicken wings and they were really good. I think the best way to cut down your red meat intake is to just substitute it with naturally great tasting food like beans, pasta, fresh vegetables, etc. Dipping peppers, carrots or celery into freshly made hummus is a great meat alternative, as is a stir-fry with eggplant, onions, peppers, and tofu. - Thanks for reading

Yum! That looks great! Good luck on your vegan journey!~ :)

looks pretty yummy to me!

I wouldn't eat it in Philadelphia, but it tasted great up in central NJ:)
