Let me guess, you hate vegans?

in #vegan8 years ago

I know I'm going to catch flack for this.

I always do when I talk about veganism. Always.

Let me guess, you're already thinking something like....."not eating meat doesn't stop animals from being killed", "where do you get your protein?" "so you just like, eat grass?"

Look here's where I'm coming from, the next generation has a greater responsibility to our planet.

I'm not going to argue that eating meat is fundamentally wrong, I don't believe that.

But without a doubt, the way in which meat is factory farmed is not sustainable.

I'm not even interested in spending a lot of time on this, but I will just list the major issues.

We cannot continue to pump massive amounts of antibiotics into our food, its not going to work.

The amount of water required to grow the grain for the meat and dairy industry along with the water required for the animals, is massive. If these resources were devoted to growing plant based foods, we could feed more people. Additionally the hormones and antibiotics are also not exactly health benefits.

But here's whats interesting....

I've never pushed my opinions on people, in fact I'm kind of in the closet about it most of the time! because I know how defensive people become. I don't have any "pushy" vegan friends either....

but we all seem to experience the same abuse for our beliefs.

Let me put it this way, I'm openly gay, but I experience more harassment because of what I eat, than being gay.

People get mad when you tell them your a vegan, fyi. Why do people even care?

I'm trying to live my best life, I'm trying to be apart of a sustainable future, and maybe I wont fix the industry alone but who cares, let me try.

If I decline food and let it slip it's because I'm a vegan, it's immediately met with, "I knew a vegan once who didn't get enough iron and it's actually really dangerous".....(note the same person is likely drinking alcohol, smoking, ect)

Let me finish with......

It takes a lot of education and research, to live this diet for long periods of time. Why does the rest of the population assume they know more about my nutrition than me?

Have you ever caught yourself making fun of a vegan?

Why? I'd genuinely like to know.

It's very interesting post :)
Thank you for sharing dear @krisy!

thanks for the kindness! I kinda expected to be met with, "but don't know know how good bacon tastes???" lolol

If I could offer one teeny bit of advice - don't go looking for 'attitude'. In that way you're pre-judging people the way you're afraid they'll judge you. At least give them a chance to stick their foot in their mouth - then, educate them on manners. i.e. - I don't tell folks what to eat and I expect the same courtesy.

Hate in your tags is a prime example. I'd think a 'today I learned' (til) would be more productive. A short, informative video to back up your research and a few words on what you learned would draw, imo, more interest.

Just my .02 steems-worth...

For the record, I'm on a health-related cholesterol lowering diet, so I'm avoiding meat and most dairy for a while. More vegetarian than vegan, but close enough. I will still eat meat, but more likely in smaller portions. That, too, is a help to making things more sustainable.

thanks! thats exactly what's interesting tho...
I'm a shy person, trust me, never in my life have I told somebody "what to eat"
you know?
like literally, never once.

I guess I just tagged hate, because thats what comes off so often.
Even when my boss found out (who I adore, and we get along great) his response was, "oh no, I hate vegans!"

Really admire your courage and conviction! I was vegetarian for a year or so, the main reason being factory farming, but couldn't keep it up because I didn't research nutrition well enough. Vegan's way tougher than just vegetarian, but I got a lot of those kinds of reactions and questions too!
