Love and Attachment- A Constant Battle

Nowadays, the choices people make is greatly influenced by the circumstances these individuals are in- thus sometimes becoming impulsive or uncertain. With this, love and attachment is being constantly misunderstood.

Firstly, what is love? Love is a feeling of? Well it can’t really be explained, individuals have different perspectives about this. Some describe love as an occurrence - people need to experience it inorder to know what is it and others describe love as an instense feeling of attraction to someone. In addition, love can also be felt in many ways, for example there is what they call platonic love- where there are no strings attached, just pure love- an innocent love people experience in an early age. Another one is described as unrequited love- a one sided love, which is perceived by many as the most heartbreaking love. And romantic love- a reaction when people feel ‘butterflies’ in their stomach- a bathetic experience.

Secondly, lets describe attachment. Attachment is described by many as a bond between two individuals or things, a connection that devotes one to someone . Its a feeling when someone needs to be around someone or something to feel delighted, safe or brings them comfort. A feeling when a person just needs someone to be with them because ‘you’re used to them being around’.

So how do people know if its love or attachment? What is the difference? One way to know is when a person says “I love you and I want you to be happy” and/or “I love you and I need us to be happy”. Both statements express love but its entirely different where in one wants the other’s happiness in order for him to be delighted as well and the other needs both of them to be happy because he’s used to it.

Here’s my perspective: love will always be present- in everything and anyone but attachment might be the beginning of something genuine or it might be the end of the sappy feeling people feel.
