Audacity Tutorial #8: Learn How To Normalize Your Video Strip for Consistent Sounds
Audacity Tutorial - It is important that you normalize your video strip
I will continue on to finish the Audacity Tutorial for my students who have been following this series to create excellent audio for their videos.
Problem we encounter when we record our video
When I do recording video, it is not a one time shot. This means that I sometimes need to put a lot of video strips into one video to make the video complete.
I need to use a video editor to put all my video strips into one place.
The problem we then encounter is that the video strips have different volume of sounds. This then creates a problem to the listener. The volume of your sounds will go up and down, quiet and loud. It becomes very annoying to listen to a video with uneven sounds.
Audacity solves the problem of uneven sounds - Use Normalization
This is where audacity comes in.
You can actually get audacity to normalize the sounds for you and this will create a pleasant experience to your hearers, especially to those who use headphones.
The sounds from one strip of video going to another will have an even sound. Your sounds will not go up and down and fluctuate because of the different times you record your videos.
Step 1 - Open your strip in the Audacity Program
Load your audio strip in the audacity program.
Here are the waves sound before normalization.
When the wave sounds are not normalized, you can see the jagged uneven wave frequencies.
Step 2 - Highlight the Entire Track
- Control A - highlight the entire track
- Click Effect
- Click Normalize
Step 3 - Use these data settings
- Tick Remove any DC offset effect
- Tick Normalize maximum amplitude to - 1.0db
- Click OK
Once you have these right settings, you can apply them into your audio strip to give you 'even' sounds in volume throughout the entire audio tracks.
Step 4 - Rinse and Repeat
Repeat this same action to all your audio tracks that you put in your one video final production.
Conclusion
Believe me, when you do this extra step of normalizaing, your audience is going to love you for this.
Too many videos have uneven sounds in their audio track. Sometimes the volume is so high and the volume so low that it is very annoying for the listener. We need to think from the listeners' point of view.
We want them to have a good experience when they listen to our audio as they watch our videos.
All it takes are those 3 steps and step 4 is just rinse and repeat.

This should be a mandatory course for lots of youtubers. :D
Yes, this will definitely upgrade the video quality. :)
Amazing, I've always wanted to learn to do audio editing on it... like shifting the frequence of my songs from 440 to 432 gonna have to look for post 1.
Thanks!
