Project Details

Node.js is an open-source, cross-platform JavaScript run-time environment that executes JavaScript code outside of a browser... Node.js allows the creation of Web servers and networking tools using JavaScript and a collection of "modules" that handle various core functionality... Node.js represents a "JavaScript everywhere" paradigm, unifying web application development around a single programming language, rather than different languages for server side and client side scripts. | Source

In simple words, this project brings value to the open source community because it facilitates the creation of all sort of applications using JavaScript, and provides a lot of help and versatility to developers, so much so that well-known companies like Netflix, Paypal, and Uber (among many others) use Node for their online services.

Since Node.js is very easy to learn and it provides a lot of benefits for developers, there is a huge community of people involved with it, which is one of the reasons why this project is available to be translated into several languages (in crowdin, one of the best translation platforms in the web, this project is available to be translated into 33 different languages, Spanish is the one corresponding to this contribution), the ultimate goal of translating Node.js is to make it easier for developers from any country to start learning about this project in their own native language.

Contribution Specifications

  • Translation Overview

This is my 65# contribution to Node.js. I have continued with the task of translating information from the Node.js’s changelog. In order to accomplish this work, the instructions of the changelogs were compiled from GitHub by a member of the Node.js development team, and then these instructions were uploaded to the translation platform known as Crowdin to facilitate the future translations activities.

It is thanks to this translation platform that these activities can be carried out in a very efficient manner, the website is perfectly designed to work with content that needs translation and it also shows the number of words translated according to the date we choose.

Similarly, when it comes to the development of open source projects such as Node.js, GitHub is the go-to platform. It was created to serve as a place where developers from all over the world could join forces in improving all sorts of open source projects, and today it is clear this platform has been a great success.

When developers are contributing their instructions to improve the way Node.js works, they need to share their findings using the GitHub platform. These instructions are always written using imperative verbs and in a very concise manner. When translating this type of content in Crowdin, we will always find some embedded links, specifically we will find the link to the GitHub where the instruction was originally posted and the link to the merged pull request.

Below we can see a few examples of the instructions I translated.

English

catch <2>certCbDone</2> exceptions

Spanish

capturar excepciones de <2>certCbDone</2>

A developer discovered that some exceptions were crashing a certain process because they weren’t handled in a proper way. Therefore, this developer indicated the need to catch these exceptions, and prevent them from causing any more crashes.

English

remove duplicate path tests

Spanish

remover pruebas de ruta duplicada

On this occasion, a developer realized there were redundant tests being applied, which means resources are being wasted because there is no point in having several tests checking the same thing. For this reason, the developer specified that “The TypeError checks are already done later on in the test file for all path functions” Source. Eventually, the duplicate path tests were removed and this issue was fixed.

English

don't install node_internals.h

Spanish

no instalar node_internals.h

This instruction was posted because node_internals.h is not for the general use but for internal use online and it depends on certain header files that aren’t normally installed. So installing it would be a waste of resources. This is why a developer shared his advice to not install node_internals.h.

  • Languages

Source language: English

Translated language: Spanish

I have made several contributions in the past, and I published a series of articles in both languages. I am also part of the Utopian + DaVinci Spanish team.

  • Word Count

The word count of this contribution is the number of words translated after subtracting words that aren’t changed, such as names, links, functions.

Part 65: 1217 words

The total numbers of words includes every word in the final translated strings, including those that aren’t actually translated, such as names, links, functions.

Hi @dedicatedguy,

Thank you for submitting your contribution!

  • Node.js is a very interesting project that contains many code values and terms related to computer science. Its difficulty relies on the fact that we must pay a lot of attention to the code in order to deliver the most accurate translation possible.

  • You did a good job with your presentation post, it explains the purpose of the text you translated in a clear and precise way. You also included useful concepts you learned while working on this contribution, as well as examples.

  • Once again, you delivered an accurate translation. Your wording and spelling are correct and appropriate for the Spanish language and for the project.

Keep up the good work :)
