Voting analysis: Is @curie still the best community support account?
This is an analysis of the voting habits of @utopian-io, @dtube, and @curie over the last 3 months.
The aim of this analysis is to compare the voting 'styles' of the above accounts to find out more information with regards to:
- Voted Steem account reputation - 7/30/90 days
- Unique author coverage
- Popular author vote counts
Each of the above will be analysed over a 7, 30, and 90 period, with an overall analysis summary to conclude.

1. Introduction
The 3 accounts analysed in this report are @dtube, @curie, @utopian-io. I have chosen to compare these accounts to try and guage:
- If there is a best account/application to aim your time at, depending on your reputation
- If these accounts are supporting many users by spreading their vote / loyal to their contributors
- If it is possible to frequently be supported by any of these accounts
@utopian-io
@utopian-io is the open source project for open source projects, housed on the Steem Blockchain. @utopian-io joined the Steem Blockchain in September 2017 and holds over 3.6 million Steem power through delegations from its kind sponsors.
@curie
Curie is a meritocratic, voluntary organization which supports the development and growth of new and existing authors on the Steem blockchain. source
@curie joined in September 2016 and has 115,000 Steem Power. However, @curie has a long voting trail that include one of the largest 'user' accounts on the Steem Blockchain.
@dtube
@dtube is a decentralised video sharing platform and is built on the Steem Blockchain. Clear comparisions can be made with YouTube, both in name and content. @dtube currently holds just over 1 million Steem Power through delegations.
Each of these accounts (and trails) can provide a sizable vote to content deemed worthy by their curation teams/moderators. Which accounts do they vote for? How many votes do they give out? Do we have to be a popular author to get a vote? Perhaps the numbers can provide the answers.
2. Votes by Steem account reputation
7 day data
The following chart show the votes cast by each account over the previous 7 days.
@utopian-io
@utopian-io has cast a total of 2212 votes over accounts which average at a reputation of 52.97.
@dtube
@dtube has cast a total of 558 votes over accounts which average at a reputation of 53.31.
@curie
@curie has cast a total of 981 votes over accounts which average at a reputation of 52.93.
Whilst @utopian-io has cast the most votes, it is @curie that has voted for the lowest average reputation. @dtube has cast 41 votes for a reputation of 70 or above, whilst @utopian and @curie have voted only once each for an account with 70+ reputation.
30 day data
The following chart show the votes cast by each account over the previous 30 days.
@utopian-io
@dtube
@curie
Summary
The data above has been compiled to include the 90 day voting totals and reputation average and listed in the following table.
Across each of the time frames analysed, @utopian-io casts the most votes but it is @curie that supports the lowest average reputation.
Over the past 90 days, @dtube has cast over 150 votes to accounts with a reputation of 70 or higher.
From this data, we could suggest that for accounts with a lower reputation have a greater chance of success by posting blog content on Steemit (busy.org and others), and utopian-io. And accounts with a higher reputation could be more likely to succeed by posting video content on dtube.
3. Unique author votes
By looking at the number of votes for unique authors, it is possible to gauge which account is supporting the widest set of users.
From the table above, we can see that over the 7 day period it is @utopian-io that casts votes to the widest set of different accounts. However, when we look at the 30 and 90 days totals, it is @curie that has reached the widest set of unique authors.
It is worth stating here that data should be taken with caution as @curie has the breadth of the Steem Blockchain accounts to target, where as @utopian-io and @dtube are almost exclusively only voting on content posted to their applications.
It is likely the case that there is a smaller subset of authors posting to @utopian-io and @dtube and so the number of unique authors voted for is lower than @curie.
If we compare @utopian-io against @dtube, we can see that there are about 300 more unique votes cast by utopian-io in each time frame analysed. It would be interesting to see if this figure changes in future.
4. Vote counts - popular authors
In this section, we look at the vote counts for the top authors by the 3 accounts in this analysis.
7 day top author vote count
In the past 7 days, we can see that @curie votes on average, 7 times for the top authors receiving a vote. This votes are most likely to be 'smaller' votes for budding new authors that have been spotted by the curation team.
Both @dtube and @utopian-io show that it is possible to pick up a vote more than once per day, with the top two @utopian-io authors receiving an average of over 3 votes each day over the last 7 days.
30 day top author vote count
90 day top author vote count
For both the 30 and 90 days time frames assessed, the trend continues with @curie voting once each day for the top 20 accounts receiving a vote.
The top 2 @utopian-io accounts have received an average of 2 votes a day for the past 90 days, and one account submitting to @dtube has also almost reached an average of 2 votes in each of the past 90 days.
From these figures, we can say that @curie is again spreading the vote to a wider selection of accounts.
As above, it's likely that this figure is due to a wider available audience to vote for.
The data also shows that their is potentially no limit to the number of votes that can be given to a particular author by both @utopian-io and @dtube.
5. Summary analysis
With regards to @dtube, it is reasonable to suggest that with the highest average reputation votes, and larger number of votes to accounts with 70 and above reputation, this account has a slight bias to more 'well established' authors. It also seems likely that once you have received that first vote, you could well be followed/voted further.
@utopian-io is the clear leader in the total number of votes issued. We can also see that @utopian-io will vote for an author as often as they submit approved content. Will only a few votes for reputation above 70, @utopian-io votes a lot for newer authors.
@curie has the lowest reputation average across all 3 time frames. This shows a clear willingness to support new authors. With over 3000 unique author votes in the past 90 days, @curie also supports the widest selection of authors - this is complimented by the general average of 1 vote each day for each author in the top 20 vote total for each time frame.
From this analysis, I would suggest that newer authors might be best contributing content via Steemit (busy.org etc.) and @utopian-io. Whilst more established accounts, could perhaps look to @dtube, if they are willing to submit video content.
However, if the content is up to the desired quality, it is very possible for any author to receive a votee from @utopian-io, @dtube, or @curie.
A future analysis could be done based on the above, but with the inclusion of more 'community accounts/applications' and with an inclusion of the number of followers that the accounts receiving votes have.
6. Tools used to gather this data and compile report
The data is sourced from SteemSQL - A publicly available SQL database with all the blockchain data held within (Data is normally 1/2 hours delayed from live)
The SQL queries to extra to the data have been produced in both SQL Server Personal Edition and LINQPAD 5.
Code examples:
Popular authors - 7 days
Distinct authors - 7 days
Vote count - 7 days
The charts used to present the data were produced using MS Excel.
This data was compiled on the 2nd February 2018 at 11:00 pm (UCT+4)
I am part of a Steemit Business Intelligence community. We all post under the tag #blockchainbi. If you have analysis you would like to be carried out on utopian-io/Steem data, please do contact me or any of the #blockchainbi team and we will do our best to help you.

every project has its predefined purpose and @curie is meant to focus on new and unrecognized steemians. great report !
Thank you @bitrocker2020!
@curie has, and is still doing a grand job as far as this analysis goes, reaching out to support easily the widest subset of Steem accounts compared to the others. Cheers!
Hey man! Nice analysis, utopian.io it's a great platform for new authors to build their SP. For normal blog posts busy.org is nice too, I always receive a vote when posting from there. I mean I think without Curie, Utopian, Busy, Dtube and others, steem would be less attractive to newcomers. Good to have that analysis, thanks !
Hey!
Yes you are right. Becoming a part of one of these 'communities' is excellent for both new and existing accounts as attracting regular votes is is a great way to retain users.
Thanks!
Good analysis. Of course, all of these initiatives are great (and obviously im biased towards one of them). My only comment on one of the three is with DTube. As you kind of alluded to, it does seem that some people who are producing content of "less than brilliant quality" do seem to get repeatedly upvoted whereas a lot of quality content on there goes un-noticed. But then, that is the same all over steem. Hopefully this will change as the platform grows and more great content providers appear on it.
Cheers!
Yeah I think @dtube is the account with the most bias, and in time utopian-io will find itself voting higher repped accounts. @curie, I think, might keep the lower rep averages as it continues to try and find the undiscovered talent.
Thanks!
Great analysis @abh12345, I only realised earlier that I haven't been following you. I was wondering why I wasn't seeing your posts in my feeds. I hope your keeping well.
Thanks!
No worries, I've failed to spot people I thought I was following many times!
Yes we are currently in Mauritius having spending a few weeks on Reunion Island - Seeing how far we can get on SBDs :)
Hope you are well too. Perhaps a utopian-io post is in order from yourself soon? :)
Highly valuable info for newbies as well as for myself. Thanks for putting in the effort to analyze! Love data-driven pieces like this... @abh12345 in fact, this came in the right time as I was also wondering about each of their unique differences and prospects. I can see that they help different groups of authors too.
You're welcome, thank you for visiting :)
I do a couple of data type posts each week, one based around curation with prizes too.
Aim for all the applications/accounts votes if you can and see what sticks - I have!
Thank you for the contribution. It has been approved.
Great work @abh12345! I would have expected a few more lower reputation users with utopian, but @eastmael probably right: it needs some time to "get used to it" until a contribution is approved. Maybe that changes as soon as sign-up via utopian is possible...
You can contact us on Discord.

Yes I thought @utopian-io would show the lowest reputation averages. Perhaps as the project matures, those contributing is becoming more static, and the votes by @utopian-io are raising the same contributors.
If this is the case we could see @utopian-io rep averages pass @dtube over the coming months.
Thanks for the approval!
While I do appreciate your analysis and the work you put into it I do see one small flaw which in the end wouldn't have changed the rankings in the category, but perhaps would have made it a bigger gap. With a Curie vote the person's experience level jumps a good 10 points instantly. And since you are seeing the numbers after the votes it should be noted that Curie does go after a much lower experience level of author and is in fact geared more toward the newer undiscovered authors with little success to that point (with exceptions of course, and the fact that you can be upvoted multiple times to a certain point)
Disclaimer: Full disclosure I am a new Curie Curator, and am just speaking from my own experience and study. I also have no knowledge of the other two platforms, so it could very well be the same case, depending on just how big their upvote and trail is.
Thanks again for the analysis.
If you mean 'reputation', the same is true for both @dtube and utopian who also give out large votes.
Also, this is the reputation of the author at the time the post was voted.
Additionally, I don't fully understand the angle of your comment, but thank you for taking the time to do so.
Sorry, yes I meant reputation.
I was just saying, I appreciate your analysis and wasn't sure if you had taken that into account. And I wasn't sure if the votes from utopian and dtube caused as a big a jump.
Sorry, didn't realize you could view the reputation number at the time of the vote, assumed it was after the vote.
Thanks again.
No worries, thanks for your input!
When you start an analysis, you don't always get back what you expect. I actually think that @curie (with the lowest rep vote average and most unique votes) has done better than I expected compared to the other accounts analysed.
Cheers!
Curie has looked after me the best. I’m not a video person, not a huge suggestion machine (although I broke the near to only music theme of my blog to do one recently), so it’s one of the only outlets for me.
I wonder how OCD and Sndbox / Sndbox-Alpha factor into things vs. Curie? They seem like the most likely of peers.
I'm glad @curie has been looking after you :)
A curator team comparison sounds interesting, i'll add it to the list.
Cheers!
I think it's actually the reputation of the user at the time the post was created, but that shouldn't make a big difference...
Over 90 days perhaps, but yes the rep is tied to the post in this case.
Hey @abh12345 I am @utopian-io. I have just upvoted you!

Thanks for this analysis @abh12345, I have notice what you said about @dtube by observation. They vote on accounts with high reputation and most accounts which have received upvotes before keep receiving.
I have tried @dtube severally without getting their upvotes, I gave up and started using Youtube. I think they should reconsider this and make some adjustments.
Good stats by @utopia.io and @curie who has reward more new users, making their stay on steemit worthwhile.
I'm sorry about your bad luck with @dtube, I hope you can try to get a vote from them at some point.
Thanks for the comments!
Thanks man, i hope so too
Nice analysis - are there any quality controls for @dtube do you know?
I can see the trail for @utopian-io in the comments to the posts, and I can see the 'rules for submission' so I know why a particular post gets an upvote and another doesn't; and I know that @curie has high standards from reading the blurb in discord.... but what about @dtube? Where are the standards published? What gets upvoted and why?
I guess the quality control lies with the manual curation.
I don't think we have standards to view for @dtube..
