Upvoting rules for beginners
I have learned about very useful upvoting rules and wanted to share with you.
The rules are:
Before we begin you should know that your curation reward is 25% of the whole amount shown.
Read the post before upvoting it. To upvote the right content.
It is recommended to upvote your own posts. Because it will increase the visibility of that post depending on your own SP.
If you upvote before 15 minutes you give 99.94% to the author and get 00.06% of your curation reward.
If you upvote after 15 minutes you give 50% to the author and receive 50% of your curation reward.
If you upvote after 27 minutes you give 10% to the author and receive 90% of your curation reward.
If you upvote after 30 minutes you receive 100% curation reward.
The recommended amount of upvotes in 24 hours is 20-40 of 100% upvotes, to avoid wasting the power spilled over the brim.
Don’t vote on content that is already popular, and have many upvotes. Because your curation will be very small to reward.
Upvote content that you like! Don't upvote content that you think could get more upvotes.

Important to know:
- Flagging use up your voting power. And it doesn't return any curation reward. But in case your flagging is verified by @steemcleaners you may earn SP. And the flagging rules are:
1- Disagreement on rewards.
2- Fraud of Plagiarism.
3- Hate speech or internet trolling.
4- Intentional miscategorized content or spam.
And if you came across abusive posts report it on https://steemit.chat/channel/steemitabuse - How curation reward is calculated: it called Reward Shares (rShares) and it is calculated by multiplying Steem Power * Voting Power * Vote weight.
- You can get curation awards for upvoting comments. But, the 30-minute rule does not apply.

With is rep at 12, I am guessing he falls under
4- Intentional miscategorized content or spam.
He has been flagged many times by people with high voting weight .
Is it better to upvote before 15 min or after 15 min ?
Better for you to upvote after 15 min, but better for the author to upvote before 15 min.
All of this is calculated from the curator's percentage which is 25% of the whole amount shown.

What if I find a very popular post, but because I like it I upvote anyway. Because I want to support the author. I might not get anything, but does the author still earn money from my upvote?
I think it's really weird that the system only rewards you for upvoting within a specific time window... :\
Does this mean even if the author writes a good article it's only gonna make money in the first day or so? And as more time passes people are not incentivized to keep voting?
