Why is @ecodesigns engaged in textile recycling and fashion designing?

We do what we do at @ecodesigns because we want to fight poverty and youth unemployment, reduce inequalities and promote women empowerment, improve the health wellbeing of people and contribute in reducing textile pollution, hence clean-up the world.

Cameroon is a country that has yet to establish adequate infrastructure. The unemployment rate is at 30% and with seven out of 10 young people under-employed. Cameroon is ranked 153rd on the 2016 Human Development Index, and it is estimated that 48 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. According to World Bank, the percentage of unemployed youth was 6.90% as of 2016. Besides youth unemployment and poverty, Cameroon is still underdeveloped and faces a major challenge in the hygiene and sanitation and waste management sectors.

The lack of education on hygiene and sanitation and waste management as well as the absence of recycling infrastructures are greatly accelerating land degradation, pollution, ill-health, poverty, and climate change. The amount of textile waste produced is rapidly increasing and more than 80% of textile waste are thrown in the landfill or burned. In fact, waste is wasted in and this explains why @ecodesigns want to change the situation by nurturing a generation of Eco-Fashion Designers who will make profits while helping people and the planet.

We can do more but we lack materials and machines to increase our textile recycling and women empowerment project. We have 11 trainees and 02 Training Directors but have just 06 machines which are not enough for the 13 young girls who are striving to get empowered as well as clean-up the world. It is for this reason that that @ecodesigns is striving to raise funds to purchase 7 machines so that we can double our productivity and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our textile recycling and fashion designing training.
