My thoughts on the Second Amendment
The second amendment reads “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
This amendment was adopted on December 15, 1791. In the times when the amendment was adopted, it was a necessity for survival. People from the United States wanted everyone to be able to protect the country in case there was a hostile attack on them. It is no coincidence that a well-regulated militia and the right to bear arms are in the same amendment. They both suggested a desire for preparation against enemies of the country, and it was justified. The United States continued to be affected by British actions against them, thus influencing certain new rules and rights being created. The second amendment was useful in that time when the country could be defended by people bearing arms, but this has changed.
The right to bear arms, is no longer necessary when analyzed from the practical point of view. Today, wars are fought with missiles, UAV’s, and many more that don’t require individuals bearing arms. The right to bear arms has only brought misery in the last few years. There have been a lot of shootings with easily accessible weapons that are no longer required for survival itself. Ultimately, the second amendment was necessary in the past, but this should be reevaluated to create a safer society.
