Ulog[Cultural day]/Gratitudeday: A set aside day
Today marks world cultural day. It's a day set aside for people to celebrate their cultural heritage. We have differs culture in the world with each of them having their own particularly in their mood of dressing, communication and daily living.
There is always the school of thought that says, one culture is not superior to another which of course is the absolute truth. Just like we are born of different character into different family, the same can be said of culture.
Nigeria, has over 200 ethnic groups of which each of these groups has their own unique style but the most prominent of these ethnic groups are the Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. This three are the largest and they have their settlement which can be locate geographical. The Yoruba's reside at the western region of Nigeria, the Hausa's can be found at the Northern Region while the Igbo's have their main settlement at the western region. This ethnic groups I can not say has really helped the country but rather plunge the country into more hardship.
Children wearing the traditional attire
I am from the Yoruba's, I know little about my culture. The Yoruba's are the proud makers of aso ofi, a beauty attire made of wool. It's of the finest and can be a perfect match for any occasions. The woman are to wear the Iro ati Buba and the men folks Agbada ati soro.
One thing I belief is that a day set aside for cultural celebration will really help the upcoming generation to understand how the cultural heritage has been and how well to preserved it. I have come across a typical full blooded Yoruba child that find it difficult to speak the language and also to understand it all because the language was prohibited by their parents. They call our native language all sort of name just to discouraged children from learning it.
Looking weird that I was the only one not having a traditional attire
Though our lingual franca might be English but before the British colonize us, we have an cultural belief, and also we have a traditional system of government which is like the modern day political system. A typical example of a Yoruba government is the Oyo Empire which have a king (Oba) as the head while it has also have the council chiefs (Oyomese). The Oyomese can be liken to today house of senate.
I was so happy today seeing people with all kinds of traditional attire especially the secondary school kids as it was mandatory for all of them to wear a traditional attire today. I wish more of cultural heritage can be preserved through learning in our primary/secondary schools. This practices will help people know what have been of their forefathers, the gods they worship and also those taboos which the tradition frowns against.
Kudos to all parents that encourage their wards into knowing more of our traditions. A special shout out to my state governor though I don't like him for making the proclamation and also enforcing everyone to showcase their traditional attire today.
