Caros amigos Ucranianos,
eu gostava de saber escrever na vossa língua para vos poder dizer tudo o que sinto neste momento, sem necessitar de um tradutor electrónico de permeio.

Em Portugal, o espectáculo da tourada tem como grande factor de atracção os forcados, que são grupos de homens que enfrentam, cara a cara, touros bravos que podem ter até setecentos quilogramas de massa muscular. E conseguem parar o animal, porque trabalham todos juntos. Estes grupos serviram muitas vezes de metáfora na nossa poética clandestina, nos tempos em que éramos oprimidos por uma ditadura, como sinónimo do facto de que "a união faz a força" e não há animal nenhum que nos derrube se estivermos todos juntos. O mais célebre exemplo é o poema de Ary dos Santos, do qual, aqui apresento um excerto.

Camarotes ou barreiras
Toureamos ombro a ombro
As feras
Ninguém nos leva ao engano
Toureamos mano a mano
Só nos podem causar dano

Isto tudo é para vos dizer que, apesar da corja que se juntou contra o direito que o povo Ucraniano tem a uma vida pacífica, livre e no pleno usufruto da sua língua, cultura, território e opções democráticas, vocês não estão sozinhos. E, todos juntos, vamos conseguir parar estes animais que ameaçam, não só os vossos direitos, mas os ideais de justiça de toda a Humanidade.

Por mim falo, que estou convosco. E vejo que vozes de toda a Europa se levantam na indignação contra a iniquidade que hoje ocorreu na América. Estaremos todos juntos, espero, ao vosso lado, contra mais este animal. Tal como na festa da tourada, só faz falta quem está, e, como dizia um célebre dito popular português: mais vale asno que me carregue, que cavalo que me derrube.

A Europa vai crescer em força para vos ajudar e, creio, encontrar finalmente o caminho de volta às ideias da liberdade, igualdade e fraternidade, não apenas entre os homens, mas também entre as nações e vai continuar a apoiar a Ucrânia, porque o vosso sofrimento também é o nosso, e o vosso fracasso pode significar o fim de um espaço de liberdade neste mundo, em que a liberdade é cada vez mais reduzida.

A Europa está convosco. Mantenha-se a esperança, a força e a coragem de enfrentar as feras de frente e, todos juntos, acabaremos por parar os abutres que já sobrevoam vosso país. Há que enfrentá-lo cara a cara e saber encaixar-nos no meio dos cornos do boi, para lhe tapar os olhos. Agarrá-lo pelo rabo e travar-lhe o ímpeto com a ajuda dos companheiros. O grande animal que se apresentou hoje na arena, não passará.

My dear Ukrainian friends,
I would like to know how to write in your language so I could tell you everything I feel right now, without needing an electronic translator in between.

In Portugal, the bullfighting spectacle has as its main attraction the forcados, which are groups of men who, face to face, fight wild bulls that can have up to seven hundred kilograms of muscle mass. And they manage to stop the animal, because they all work together. These groups often served as a metaphor in our clandestine poetics, in the times when we were oppressed by a dictatorship, as a synonym for the fact that "unity is strength" and there is no animal that can bring us down if we all stand together. The most famous example is the poem by Ary dos Santos, of which I present an excerpt here.

Doesn't matter sun or shade
Boxes or barriers
We fight shoulder to shoulder
The beasts
No one will deceive us
We fight face to face
The only thing that causes us harm
Is waiting

This is all to tell you that, despite the mafia that has gathered against the right of the Ukrainian people to a peaceful, free life and in full enjoyment of their language, culture, territory and democratic options, you are not alone. And, all together, we will be able to stop these animals that threaten not only your rights, but the ideals of justice of all Humanity.

I speak for myself, when I say that am with you. And I see that voices from all over Europe are rising in indignation against the iniquity that has occurred in America today. We will all be together, I hope, by your side, against this animal. Just like at the bullfight festival, the only people that will be missed are the ones who are there, and, as a famous Portuguese saying goes: it's better to have a donkey that carries me than a horse that knocks me down.

Europe will grow in strength to help you and, I believe, finally find the way back to the ideas of freedom, equality and fraternity, not only among men, but also among nations, and will continue to support Ukraine, because your suffering is also ours, and your failure could mean the end of a space of freedom in this world, in which freedom is increasingly reduced.

Europe is with you. Keep hope, strength and courage to face the beasts head on and, all together, we will end up stopping the vultures that are already flying over your country. We have to face the animal face to face and know how to fit in between the bull's horns, to cover his eyes. Grab him by the tail and stop his momentum with the help of our companions. The great beast that appeared in the arena today shall not pass.
