Sunak proposes National Service
So the Conservatives came out with one of their first new policy pledges of the election: National Service.
There'll be 30,000 paid positions in the military for a year, getting training on things such as logistics and procurement. Or people could choose to do unpaid voluntaring one weekend a month.
Twitter was ablaze with people furious about it, as they interpreted it as conscription to go to war! Here is what the polling says:
Would you support or oppose compulsory national service for young people?
Support: 42%
Oppose: 34%
Net support: +8
Net support amongst…
18-34 year olds: -3
35-49: -5
50-64: +14
Over-65s: +26
2019 Con: +30
2019 Lab: -7
Reform: +38
2-5 May, 2,001 adults, JLP
It seems clear the Conservatives are trying to squeeze the Reform vote.
