Optimism and Pessimism in Britain
Pollsters regularly ask, "Are Britons optimistic or pessimistic about the general direction in which the UK is heading?"
As of 31 March 2024, the result is
Pessimistic: 42% (-3)
Optimistic: 30% (+2)
That's actually quite a big movement in the space of a week. It might be because Spring is finally here. It might be because electricity bills finally came down on 1st April. It might be because the National Insurance cut of 2% is effective this month.
Here is the chart of how this has changed over time:
When Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister in Oct 2022, after the Liz Truss debacle, 60% were pessimistic about the country's direction. It's down to 42%. If the optimistic people reach 35%, his chances for re-election improve.
