The plight of the disabled in Uganda.
Uganda is one of the worst countries for a disabled person to live in. Most of the disabled people suffer discrimination from everyone around them including family which hides them from the community, jobs which don't give them a chance to show their skills, schools which deny them admission. For this reason, disabled people keep growing up with a mindset that they are not equal to the rest of the people who are fine and are not worth the same rights they enjoy.
It becomes worse when it comes to the women who are prone to attacks from men demanding for sex. This always ends in rape incase the women protest. Disabled people have not been protected enough in societies though some organisations have come up to raise a voice for them. The resources are not enough to support all the disabled in the country.
There is a lot of effort required to enable the disabled enjoy life just like any ordinary citizen in Uganda. Government and other agencies need to come up and create more awareness through media on living with disability and educate people on how disabled people should be treated. Programs equipping the disabled with skills at no or less costs too need to increase in number to support the disabled financially while at the same time helping them mentally to overcome the negativity that surrounds their conditions. This is among the multitudes of ways the disabled need to be supported and together we can give the disabled a voice.
