Fighter Profile: "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey

'Rowdy' Ronda Rousey is the former Strikeforce and UFC women's bantamweight champion. She is a black belt in judo, and trains boxing consistently with long-time trainer and friend Edmund Taverdyan. Her resume speaks for itself as she has dismantled top contenders like Meisha Tate and Liz Carmouche her whole career; she is a devastating finisher and will capitalize on the smallest of openings to attain her beloved arm bar. Her judo base is incredibly powerful, once she attains the clinch on her opponent there is no escape.

Ronda has been known to pack a wallop as well, in Brazil early last year, it only took one good right hand to face plant Bethe Correira (who has been a very durable fighter in her UFC tenure). Ronda's legendary win streak as champion have made her Hall of Fame-worthy, she is a true prodigy and had once claimed the spot as best pound for pound fighter in the world. She is returning to the octagon for the first time in over a year. With a heavy heart and focused mind, she will need to garner all her skills to win this tough battle ahead.

Fighter Profile: Amanda "The Lioness" Nunes

Amanda 'Leoa' Nunes is the American Top Team trained judo brown belt fighting out of Florida. 'Leoa' or 'Lioness' is a fearsome striker with a solid and underrated wrestling game. Amanda has evolved into more of a Muay Thai stylist whom uses her judo base to fend off grapplers. A karate trainee since 4 years old, and a boxer since 8...Amanda grew up rough and tough in the streets of Brazil. The advanced training methods of her camp 'ATT', and being able to live in the U.S. with exposure to many world class coaches have shown in the improvements in her all-around game.

'Leoa' is a lanky fighter that has perfected landing power at the end of her shots, her reach, and devastating kicks make her very hard to get inside on. Amanda's domination of Muay Thai powerhouse Germaine De Randamie on the ground showed her willingness to adapt to fighting in a way that suits her. She can resort to striking at range against wrestlers, she can also use her black belt in jiu-jitsu to have girl's play in the guard, get stood back up by the ref, or get submitted. Amanda is the queen of the division, but she must defend the belt to show her true worth.

The Matchup + Prediction

This fight is ballistic! Expect both women to come out of the gate with the intent to seek and destroy. Ronda knows no other method to fighting than bull rushing forward and dominating the inside game and clinch; Amanda can play both sides of the coin, but it would be much wiser to stay on the outside and crack the Rowdy one with a few good shots before initiating any type of grappling exchange.

Amanda is a brown belt in judo and a black belt in jiu-jitsu, this type of mindset and experience will cause problems for Ronda initiating the floor battles. Ronda is a black belt in judo, and the greatest judoka to ever grace the cage, but her striking acumen is lacking. Amanda will need to expose Ronda on the feet, and pull her out of comfortable ranges. Ronda will also need to avoid the long powerful blows, or she will need to eat necessary shots to get inside and tug the lioness to the ground.

This is an incredibly close and volatile matchup, Ronda is returning from a lot of defeats, and there are a lot of unknowns playing into her mental and state for fighting in general. We see that Amanda is at her best, and mentally in her prime. Ronda could not have had a tougher fight made for her, it makes you question if Ronda is more ready than ever for this opponent... The smart bet is playing the under here, these ladies don't waste time...there will be a finish and it will be quick.
