Great legacies are often defined by iconic moments

Muhammad Ali's 'against-all-odds' KO of George Foreman in Zaire (1974), with seconds left in the 8th Round:

Diego Maradona's solo second goal against England in the 1986 World Cup Quarter Final:

Zinedine Zidane's volley to win the 2002 Champions league final for Real Madrid.

Anderson Silva's front kick KO of Vitor Belfort

Or Anderson Silva's matrix style KO of Forrest Griffin

Then again there was Anderson Silva's submission of Chael Sonnen to defend the UFC middleweight title in a fight he was comprehensively losing... come to think of it, Anderson Silva's career is a human highlight reel!

In any event, all great champions live for moments like these. Legacy defining moments.

Date with destiny

Demetrious-Johnson-Ray-Borg.png
On Saturday night in Las Vegas, a town ravaged by an act of cowardly brutality only a week before, a diminutive man with a big reputation lit a spark of magic in the City of Sin.

Demetrius 'Mighty' Johnson, entered the Octagon at UFC 216, determined to do what no man in the history of the UFC has achieved. The UFC Flyweight Champion was attempting to win his 11th straight title fight.

He was tied with the great Anderson Silva on 10 straight title wins. No-one was betting against him. Johnson is the only UFC Flyweight Champion there has been. "DJ" has no peers in his division.

Between DJ and history stood Ray Borg. A talent but ultimately over-matched opponent.

And so it proved.

DJ dominated the fight. He was cruising to a points win. However in the fifth and final round, when most in his position would have played it safe, DJ pulled off an audacious move that would stamp his place in history with an exclamation mark.

Video game Champ

DJ is renowned for his love of video games and can often be found live streaming on Twitch. And the move he pulled off with 2 minutes left of the fifth round was straight out of animated fiction.

DJ had Borg's back standing and was planting knees into his opponents leg. Borg throw up an elbow, giving DJ just the space he needed.

DJ suplexed Borg, lifting him off his feet, then mid-air transition into an armbar. Locking on the armbar as they both hit the ground.

Borg swarmed and tried in vain to break the hold. He was forced to tap seconds later as DJ cranked on his arm.

It was an amazing submission to top off an amazing achievement by an amazing fighter.

Long may the Mighty DJ's reign continue

If you're still wondering what all the fuss is about...

Watch the video below for a breakdown of just how extraordinary DJ's submission was:

Definitely one of the greatest MMA moments of all time!

Amazing post. What a sub!
You should have included the flying heel-hook Ryo-Chonen planted on Anderson Silva in Pride. Which incidentally has just become my SECOND favourite MMA submission of all time. Kudos Mighty Mouse.

Good call. Both were kick-ass moves!

Mighty Mouse is a supreme champion.

Best for Diego Maradona's solo second goal against England in the 1986

amazing effort... but .. question: was the first with the hand?

Some of those gifs are history, moments wich put a mark on sports!
Really interesting, even for someone who's not really into sports:)
Thank you:)
Enjoy @nature.art, my kind of art!

I see the next Mohammad Ali UFC version. I see history in the making

You have a lot of good posts but your fight night posts are my favorite!

MMA is such a young sport getting more and more popular every day. Maybe not for many years, but DJ's record will one day be broken.May be)

I have never seen an armbar like that. wow!12036766_465868996919481_778055691212999734_n.jpg
