Instant Gratification, Garbage Values, and Pretty Much Everything Else That Makes up a Millennial
It is some sort of negligence of your body when you give it too much rest. People nowadays are taught otherwise: we are taught to overeat, oversleep and overstay in bed. Are these healthy behaviors? Humans, after being so active for last millions of years are now indulging in sloth activities. We allow ourselves to lose control of ourselves and then we wonder why it’s tough to live to our full potential.
Self-control is not just a thing that was invented by motivational speakers and businessmen trying to sell you their books and coaching programs; self-control is something that we were programmed against for last century because lack of it makes somebody else rich.
Think about it yourself. You are led to believe that a bit of chocolate won’t hurt you when you are feeling sad; Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is a cure for depression and PMS. Alcohol helps you get loose in tensed social situations, an expensive alcohol dictates your extravagant taste. Netflix gives you the luxury of spending a whole day in a bed binge-watching with the company of Lay chips and popcorn. If you add Tinder into the equation, you don’t even need to put in effort into being charming or charismatic. These are the things we, you, I refer to when we are trying to “de-stress”, you know, relax a little, get rest. Overeating, oversleeping, overdrinking. These things have joined our daily lives, making us believe that we need to indulge to unwind.
You know what else is a newly invented thing? A choice. We can now choose a needless thing from a number of other needless things. We are constantly fed images that compare one item to another and that tells us that we need this, we want this, and that we must have it. You need this car, you need this TV, you need this cellphone. Do you? Today these things are an unavoidable part of our daily lives. If you choose to say no to them in a first world country, you are an outcast, a misfit, maybe even a dinosaur.
And what do we have now, what kind of generation does this overselling breeds? A bunch of overly sensitive kids heavily dependent on instant gratification with values that are dictated by an app or a billboard. Well, that’s a time to be alive.
