[TV Discovery] Battlestar Galactica (2004)
In case you were living under a rock in the mid to late 00s, I'd like to talk about one of my all time favourite shows ever; Battlestar Galactica. This isn't the cult favourite original from 1978, but the 2004 remake developed by Ronald D. Moore, and is a reimagining of what came before. The show has a very respectable score of 8.7 on IMDB, and if you haven't seen it already I'd like to try and convince you why you should.
For those who aren't aware of the franchise, it began in 1978 with a tv series followed by a miniseries called Galactica 1980. There's since been a plethora of other media, including books, comics, board games and video games. The newer reimagined version began life as a miniseries in 2003 a year before it's eventual full series treatment. The show ran for 4 seasons and came to an end in 2009.
Let's set the scene; the show is set in a distant star system, where twelve colonies of humans have built up a technologically advanced civilisation that was in a period of relative peace after a distant war with an android race of their own creation known as the Cylons, affectionately called "toasters" by many in the show. After years with no contact, the Cylons finally send an emissary to a station where the two races can meet, much like the area along the DMZ in Korea. This ambassador however doesn't seem like a Cylon, she's a human female... or so we think. The station explodes, starting up the long dormant war between man and machine once more.
Long story short, the humans are massacred and a handful remain in what appears to be the only remaining Colonial Fleet ship left; the titular Battlestar Galactica. We follow the ships officer Commander Bill Adama and newly appointed President Laura Roslin, as well as the ships crew, civilian survivors and whoever else is left of the human race as they try to escape the Cylons and find the fabled thirteenth colony.
There is so much that I'd like to talk about, but I also don't want to ruin it for you as I strongly recommend you give it a try. The show features a great cast, great writing, captivating music and some amazing cinematography and CG effects. The shots outside of the ship were truly groundbreaking for a TV show at the time. It's not what you'd call devoid of themes either, with Time magazine describing it as:
“a gripping sci-fi allegory of the war on terror, complete with monotheistic religious fundamentalists (here genocidal cyborgs called Cylons), sleeper cells, civil-liberties crackdowns and even a prisoner-torture scandal”
It definitely felt like it captured that feel of the early to mid 00s and the developing political situation after 9/11. This familiarity helped give the show its realism and set it apart from many Sci-Fi and military based shows before it.
There was also a spin-off prequel of sorts that sadly only got one season called Caprica, which explored, or at least intended to, how the Cylons were created but it started off feeling more like a futuristic teen drama. The ending left many wanting to see more, but alas we never got it. There was also another prequel in the form of a web series called Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome which was later released as a TV movie. It followed a young Bill Adama in the first Cylon Wars and was very well received, and only left me yearning for more BSG.
So, what do you think? Have I sold it to you? Or, maybe you're already a fan? Let me know your thoughts and feelings down below, and I'll see you in the comments. I loved the original show and the remake as well. It took a while for the remake to grow on me as I had seen the original as a kid and reconciling the child's view with the adult's just took a bit of brain flexing. The remake was obviously way more adult oriented than the first one. I still am not really satisfied with the Cylons arc later in the remake's series. I mean I get it what the writers were trying to do, but at the time it was a bit confusing and at times hate to say it, boring. I haven't seen the other shows you mentioned but I'll have to go find them now. Another thing I really liked about the remake was I felt the acting was really good compared to a lot of TV shows.
Yeah I used to watch the original with my dad on an evening when I was little.
I know what you mean about the Cylons story arc later in the seasons, I get the feeling there must have been some disagreements in the writing room. In fact, wasn't this all at the same time as the script writers strike anyway? But yeah, it definitely got fairly confusing. I liked the skinjob toasters, but there was something about so many of them masquerading as humans for so long it became a bit hard to believe.
Caprica was a bit of a wet blanket to be honest, like I say, futuristic teen drama is how I'd describe it to begin with. Blood and Chrome comes highly recommended, my only criticism is there wasn't enough of it!

Your bot flagged/down voted my latest post.
I'm curious what is wrong if I (rarely) post my trades?
Maybe a bug in the code? ;-)
I don't have a bot, or any other accounts like it says in my profile about section. If you've been flagged by an account that's using my name, I'm afraid they're scammers. I've already written quite a few posts on this, but my best advice for the time being is to ignore it. They are worth nothing and there are already bots setup by other users to counter the flags.
Oh, I didn't know, sorry about that
It's ok. They've had the Steem removed from all of their accounts and seem to be inactive now, so hopefully it shouldn't happen again. Even if it does, their flags can't do you any harm.
